Wigan Athletic midfielder makes loan move to Oakwell.
We are delighted to welcome Wigan Athletic and Egypt international midfielder Sam Morsy to the Club on a loan deal until the end of the 2016/17 season.
After an intense summer of speculation regarding the midfielder’s future and a number of clubs looking to secure his signature, Sam chose to join the Reds, citing it is as the best possible move for progression in his career.
As a versatile and agile midfielder, 24-year-old Morsy will be a player that will help to strengthen the Reds central area and bring vital experience having already played over 150 football league matches.
He is known best for his time with Chesterfield Football Club where he made 99 appearances and scored seven goals during his time at the Derbyshire based club. Prior to that, Morsy played 71 games for Port Vale, scoring four goals. His latest side were Wigan Athletic, whom he joined in January 2016. After playing 16 times for The Latics, Morsy was seen as a hugely influential part of the side’s late winning run towards the League One title.
Morsy was rewarded for impressive his performances at Club level and recently gained his first international cap with Egypt. The midfielder made his full international debut last night for the African nation in a friendly against Guinea, in which the game finished 1-1.
On his latest summer recruit, Paul Heckingbottom said, “Sam is a fantastic signing and he is a player that will go far in the game. His experience at such a young age shows just how highly he is valued. To have played over 150 senior matches at the age of 24 will stand him in good stead during his time with us.
“We were a bit short in midfield so to bring in someone with Sam’s ability is fantastic. He is certainly not shy of a tackle and has a track record of scoring some important goals too. I’d like to thank Wigan Athletic for letting him join us on loan.”
