New Reds signing Cole Kpekawa, spoke exclusively to Barnsley Player HD after completing his move to Oakwell!
After signing a three-year contract with the Reds today, the England Under 20 International defender has arrived at Oakwell from Queens Park Rangers for an undisclosed fee.
Kpekawa spoke about the move in detail and talked about the reasons he chose Barnsley.
“I’m happy to be here finally and to get it done. There was a lot of talk about it and you’re wondering if it will happen or not but now I’m here and I can’t wait to crack on.”
A left-back by trade, Cole has also operated in the centre of defence and he feels this can only be of benefit to himself and the Club.
“I enjoy playing either really, I can play both but I think the Gaffer sees me playing on the left but I suppose we’ll just see how it goes. I’m happy to play anywhere really, my aim is to break into the team, concentrate and perform well wherever I’m asked to play. But I probably prefer left-back.”
Having already experienced a couple of loan spells, Kpekawa feels he’s in a good place to kick on and push for a Championship position having gained vital experience at a young age.
“I’ve had three loan spells. I was at Colchester United when I was just 17 years old, then I was at Portsmouth. I was at Leyton Orient last season, I think I did really well there. I learnt a lot during my time out on loan.
“I think I’ve joined at a good time, the Club is on the up. It was a fantastic achievement to get up like they did through the Play-Offs and it’s been a good start so far this season too.”
Having spoken with Paul Heckingbottom, Cole says he’s excited to get started at Oakwell.
“It’s a young squad and that excites me. I’ve spoken to the Gaffer and he’s explained how he expects the lads to play and it interests me a lot. Like I say, it’s exciting and I can’t wait to get into it now.”
