Aidy White: "I’ve been looking forward to this game!"

25 August 2016

Reds left-back Aidy White is relishing the chance to face off against one of his former sides in this weekend’s South Yorkshire derby against Rotherham United.

The 24-year-old made 10 appearances in all competitions for the Millers last season before joining the Reds on-loan in mid-November.

White has been looking forward to this fixture since the fixtures were announced and is hopeful of getting one over on his former employers.

He said, “I’m really looking forward to it, it’s a chance for me to play against one of my former clubs. It’ll be a great game with a good atmosphere and hopefully we’ll come out with the right result.

“I’ve been looking forward to this game and a couple of others since the fixture list came out. I wasn’t at Rotherham long but when I was there I enjoyed myself.

“I came here and got a lot more game time which was obviously beneficial to me but I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead and hopefully we can carry on our good start and get a win.”

Having some inside knowledge on the players in Alan Stubbs’ squad is something that White is hopeful to use to his advantage this weekend.

He told Barnsley Player of the players to keep an eye on and the threats Rotherham carry.

“Danny Ward is a big strong powerful player who can finish as well but they seem to change the team around every year and they’ve brought in lots of new players.

“I’m expecting them to be a high-tempo side that will press us high up the pitch but hopefully we’ll deal with the challenge,” he added.

After being blighted by injury last season, White has been able to stamp his authority on the left-back position and get a good run of games under his belt.

He hopes to continue his fine link-up play with Adam Hammill and cause Rotherham’s full-backs problems.

“Every game I feel I’m getting better and fitter and it’s helping massively. I’ve got that run of games now and hopefully that can continue but on a personal point I’m happy.

“I’m always looking to get better but I’m happy in the side.

“Adam is a great player and sometimes you give him the ball and he works his magic and other times I get the chance to go on the overlap.

“The good thing is he understands me and I understand him and when we do link up, we look good. He’s a fantastic player and it’s good to play alongside him,” said White.

The left-back has also called on the Reds fans to get to Oakwell this weekend and get behind the side as they attempt to secure a third win in four matches.

“The more that cheer us on, the better,” he said. “Hopefully we’ll get more fans down but so far, the atmosphere they create gives us an extra edge and if we can get as many down with it being a local derby, it would be fantastic.”
