A stunning solo effort from trialist Duane Holmes was the highlight of a battling game between two competitive sides.

The Reds took the lead midway through the first half as Jack Cowgill picked up the ball in defence and calmly found Holmes in space, who then ran from his own half beating multiple Crewe defenders on his way before he charged into the area and smashed the ball into the far corner.

The Reds were then on top and dominated until the half time whistle, coming close to extending their lead further through Jack Cowgill’s header, but it went narrowly wide.

The second half began with Crewe equalising quickly, against the run of play. The Reds failed to clear a cross properly and were punished as a deflected shot trickled into the corner of the net.

Both sides then exchanged chances but no goals were forthcoming, mainly due to Crewe’s ‘keeper, Harrison, being in excellent form.

Reds XI: Murphy (GK), Evans, Dolan, Drennan, Cowgill, Matthews, Holmes, Harris, Bailey, Khan, Templeton.

Subs: Smith, Ash, Wardle, Kay, Milenge.
