Barnsley controlled the majority of play but failed to make their dominance show on the scoresheet after picking up a respectable point and a clean sheet at Burton Albion.

The Reds had a decent chance to test McLaughlin on six minutes after Ivan Toney was brought down just outside the area. Adam Hammill attempted a curler towards the top corner but his effort was just over the top.

Barnsley had started to take control of the game and twice saw decent deliveries from a Roberts throw and Isgrove cross cleared. Then Ivan Toney lashed over a volley after a good header back by Winnall on 16 minutes.

On 19 minutes Ivan Toney was again in a good position to meet Isgrove's deflected cross and, with his back to goal, an overhead kick sailed over the crossbar.

Another decent chance from close range went begging as Barnsley continued to control the match. This time Sam Winnall scooped over from Hammill's left-wing cross as he met the delivery seven yards out on 27 minutes.

Chances dried up for the Reds and the only sniff of goal Burton got was a scuffed attempt by Butcher that trickled wide.

Second half

It was a case of picking up where they left off in the first half but Barnsley needed a goal to show for their dominance.

The hosts came close to an opener but for a superb piece of defending by Alfie Mawson. A cross from Cansdell-Sherriff seemed destined for Akins' head but Mawson flicked away with a brilliant header just in the nick of time.

Ivan Toney didn't connect with a 22-yard free-kick as well as he would have liked after winning the set-piece himself on 57 minutes.

The game really opened up as the clock ticked past the hour mark, with Adam Hammill breaking and cracking over a vicious strike. At the other end Beavon laid the ball on a plate for Butcher to strike from 20 yards but the ball fizzed wide of the right-hand post.

Hammill's ball over the top was chased down by Toney and the striker clashed with goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin on the edge of the box as the Brewers stopper cleared.

Barnsley's first substitute came on 74 minutes as Toney was replaced by Ashley Fletcher. Six minutes later, Isgrove made way for Chapman.

Adam Davies made a good save - his second and best of the match - as Duffy hammered a powerful strike towards the top corner and Mawson was on hand to clear the rebound on 86 minutes.

A glorious chance in the 90th minute fell for Sam Winnall as Roberts' long throw dropped his way. The striker attempted an overhead kick at the far post and his effort dropped just wide.
