U21s: Reds 2 Bristol City 3

28 September 2015

Reds 2 (Smith 5, Roberts 57)
Bristol City 3 (Bishop-Wisom 64, Lemonheigh-Evans 69, Fry 78)

A strong Barnsley XI were stunned at Oakwell after seeing their two-goal lead overturned by Bristol City.

With two perfect headers from Michael Smith and Marc Roberts handing Barnsley the lead, three goals in the space of 14 minutes turned the game on its head to stretch the Reds' winless run.

It took just five minutes for the Reds to find the net as Conor Wilkinson's teasing run down the left carved the Robins defence open. His delivery was perfect for Smith who looped his header over the 'keeper and into the far corner.

Morrell charged at goal on 12 minutes as the visitors responded but he saw his shot blocked wide by Roberts' determined leg.

Less than 60 seconds later, Wilkinson's ball to Smith was expertly flicked into the path of Jackson but he got under the ball and fired over the bar from 15 yards.

Smith should have done better to make it 2-0 on 18 minutes after turning ever so well on half-way. The striker bombed forward with Wilkinson and Jackson outnumbering the Robins' defenders but he could only loft over.

After the break, a great ball from Drennan sent Jackson away on 55 minutes and the striker took his chance early only to see O'Leary gather rather comfortably away to his left.

Three minutes before the hour, Marc Roberts doubled his side's lead in emphatic fashion. Bywater's corner was met by the fiercest of headers from Roberts who absolutely thundered his effort into the back of the net.

The away side pulled one back on 64 minutes when the flag stayed down on Bishop-Wisdom, with the striker slamming into the near post.

Five minutes later, it was all square thanks to a moment of genius from Lemonheigh-Evans as he lofted the ball over the 'keeper.

It got one better on 78 minutes when Fry was allowed to bites of the cherry to hammer into the roof of the net and turn the game on its head.

Reds Senior Development Coach Paul Heckingbottom said, "At 2-0 up we were probably in control.

"We've thrown it away because we weren't as good in the second half. Bad individual mistakes have cost us the game."

Reds: Davies, Bree, Scott, Roberts, Gooda, Bywater, Digby, Jackson, Drennan, Wilkinson, Smith.
