Barnsley and Sheffield United played out a 0-0 draw in the Professional Development Under 21s league at Oakwell.

On a bitterly cold afternoon, a hard-fought and scrappy South Yorkshire derby saw both sides fail to create enough clear-cut opportunities.

The closest either side came to scoring was when Connor Dimaio hit the crossbar towards the end of the first half.

Chances were at a premium and George Maris came closest to breaking the deadlock to Barnsley, but he fired over on 70 minutes from 22 yards.

The Reds' defence stood strong and had to throw their bodies on the line to keep the Blades at bay.

“It was a competitive game, especially in the second half," said Senior Development Coach, Paul Heckingbottom.

“Part of our job is to replicate the intensity of a first team game. As it wore on it got tougher, stronger and more competitive and that’s what I want.

“You want to be tested and pushed all the way and we certainly were."
