Lee Johnson's Oldham Reaction

21 November 2015

'Big Relief' says Reds Boss

Reds Head Coach Lee Johnson gave his thoughts on his side's 2-1 victory over his former Club Oldham Athletic.

"I’m delighted and very emotional," said Johnson. "We deserved it. We could have been 3-0 up early on, but I'm chuffed to bits.

"In fairness I have to thank the owner for sticking with it and supporting me when I needed it with players coming in.

"We’re in a false position. We have a good squad. We need to back it up with wins now and I thank everyone for their continued support through what’s been a difficult situation.

"(Kevin) Long deserved his goal - he was fantastic today. He’s had eight months out and come back strong and aggressive. Overall I'm well pleased and we deserved it.

"It’s been hard on us. We haven’t deserved to lose this many. We are where we are and I’ve spent many long, lonely nights working out what to do. We could have lost that game as previously we’ve dominated and not taken our chances, but today we didn’t.

"I’ve seen my old man go through similar, I know people were asking for my head but the fans were singing my name and singing for the team today. The away support has been fantastic, I thank them a lot."

Conor Hourihane's first half strike was cancelled out by Mark Yeates with 12 minutes left, but Kevin Long stepped up with the winner as he smashed home in the 89th minute.

"It’s only one result but it’s important," continued Johnson. "We build for the next one, we are in games and we will get chances, we just need to cut out the silly mistakes. We haven’t been getting away with them.

"The last two games we’ve been decent but we had indidividual errors. The two lads who came in did well. We’ll go into Tuesday with refreshed confidence.

"To get that win is a big relief."
