Full Time: Reds v Mansfield - Bobby's Testimonial

18 July 2015

Reds 4 (Hassell pen 7, Ball 37, Rothwell 67, Nardiello 83)

Mansfield Town XI 3 (Green 9, Lambe 30, Westcarr 85)

On a glorious day under the Oakwell sunshine, Bobby Hassell celebrated his 10 years with the Reds by leading out Lee Johnson’s side against his first Club, Mansfield Town.

Hassell, with the armband proudly wrapped around his arm, was presented with a framed shirt by Reds Owner Patrick Cryne ahead of kick-off in front of the home faithful.

The Reds were presented with a great chance from the spot on seven minutes after Josh Scowen was upended in the box following a great run which started on the left-hand side.

There was only going to be one taker and Bobby Hassell made no mistake from 12 yards.

The lead didn’t last long as, barely 90 seconds later, a free-kick deflected kindly into the path of Green seven yards out and his scuffed attempt deceived Davies to make it 1-1.

Mansfield edged in front on the half-hour mark as Lambe managed to dig out a shot from a tight angle, dinking over the advancing Davies for 2-1.

On 37 minutes, the Reds levelled through a stunning finish from trialist David Ball. Alfie Mawson's measured pass over the top was expertly cushioned over the stranded Shearer by Ball from outside the box.

Second half

Nine minutes into the second half, Josh Scowen blasted the Reds' first attempt of the second period over the bar after a neat lay-off from Smith to the edge of the box.

The Stags replied with a vicious volley on the hour mark that Davies had to hold well at his near post. Green centred a lovely cross for Westcarr who let fly but Davies did well to keep hold of the effort.

Conor Wilkinson showed great feet before turning and firing a looping shot from 30 yards that had Shearer beaten all ends up, but his attempt landed on the roof of the net.

Seconds after the spectacular attempt by Wilkinson, Alfie Mawson was replaced by Matty Templeton.

On 67 minutes, Reds new-boy Joe Rothwell made his mark by finishing off a lovely cross from James Bree to make it 3-2. Bree did tremendously well down the right-hand side to pick out the run of Rothwell who poked him from 12 yards.

With 70 minutes played, the whole Reds team were replaced by the former Tykes to an incredible roar from the East Stand.

Martin 'Disco' Devaney went on a marauding run with 73 played that was brought to a halt on the edge of the box. Howard's free-kick was blocked by the wall into the path of Hassell, who then went close with a low drive that sailed just wide of the post.

It seemed Mansfield would level on 79 minutes but David Preece made a spectacular stop at his near post to deny the Mansfield full-back.

On 83 minutes, the home fans were brought to their feet by a fourth goal created by Austin and finished by Nardiello. Barnsley-born full-back Austin chipped in a delightful cross for Nardiello to nod home at the far stick.

The away side pulled one back through Craig Westcarr on 86 minutes. After turning Heckingbottom inside out in the area, he drilled low into the far corner for 4-3.
