Barnsley Football Club is saddened to learn of the death of former player John McPhee.

Having begun his career with hometown team Motherwell, he made 75 appearances before joining Blackpool.

He spent the majority of his career with the Seasiders - hitting 15 goals in 259 games - featuring in many different positions and winning the club's Player of the Year award twice.

From Blackpool he joined the Reds in the summer of 1970 and made 31 appearance, scoring three times - his first of which from the penalty spot against Aston Villa.

Following his time at Oakwell he had an 85-game stint at Southport.

Everybody at Barnsley Football Club would like to pass on their sincere condolences to John's family and friends at this difficult time.
