Charlton Athletic U18s 3
Barnsley’s Under 18s enjoyed a six-goal thriller in their opening day fixture against current league champions, Charlton Athletic.
Goals from Jacob Brown, Louis Wardle and Louis Rowe saw the Reds cruise to a 3-1 lead, but the youngsters were pegged back late on from an Addicks set-piece.
“We knew it would be a very tough game,” said Academy Manager, Ronnie Branson. "Charlton won the Category Two League last year, so we knew it would be a tough game.
“The first game of the season is always interesting as you put your squad together over the summer and see what happens.
"A draw was probably a fair result. It was a good game, it was quite robust but when you’re 3-1 up, you like to think you can go on and win the game but, unfortunately, we conceded from the kick-off of our third goal.
"They scored a free-kick towards the end. But it was a decent performance to build on. We will get better. We’ll take that, move on and go again.”
