Winning Streak Ended By Bluebirds

3 March 2014

Cardiff City U18s 2
Barnsley U18s 1

Barnsley Under 18s' winning streak came to an end as they were narrowly defeat at Cardiff City on Saturday.

After an eight-match winning run in the league, the youngsters were undone in the Welsh capital but scored the pick of the goals through James Bree.

The 16-year-old, who recently signed a professional deal with the Reds, scored a 25-yard peach as the Reds fought back late on.

Head of Academy Coaching, Mark Burton, told barnsleyfc.co.uk, "There were chances at either end but, to be fair, Cardiff were the better side on the day.

"James has scored a screamer, which is great for the lads, but we've left ourselves too open at the back.

"The lads will dust themselves down after a great run, and focus on Leeds this weekend."

The Reds blazed two great one-on-one opportunities in the first half and could have even levelled late on as Nana's header hit the bar, but Burton admits the Bluebirds were better on the day.

"Five or six of our lads have had an off day," added Burton. "We''ll make sure we're back on track heading into our derby this weekend."

Reds XI v Cardiff: Chadderton, Bree, Smith, Freeman, Holgate, McHale (Templeton 60), Alexander-Salmon (Pilkington 65), Rogerson (Gooda 46), Biggins, Nana, Maris.
