The scrappiest of goals lost if for the Reds in an evenly contested clash at Oakwell.
It was the game that could have been for the Reds but in the end lost out to a late set-piece, deep in stoppage time.
The Reds came flying out of the traps and really looked up for it, notching a shot on target inside 20 seconds. Stephen Dawson won the ball by pressing and crossed for O'Grady whose header was straight at Camp.
The visitors responded on five minutes with a low shot at Steele from Fraser but he palmed away comfortably.
Wilson really had the Reds fired up and Jennings sent a wicked shot in that deflected over for a corner on 14 minutes. A minute later Dawson once again won the ball before fizzing in a low shot off the greasy surface that Camp handled well.
A vicious strike from Ritchie almost caught Steele out on 18 minutes with the ball swerving in the air from 25 yards but Steele punched it away from danger and wide.
On 29 minutes the Cherries had a great chance to take the lead as Surman found himself one-on-one with Steele but dinked an effort wide of the far post.
It really should have been 1-0 and to the Reds this time as Martin Woods fired wide when presented with practically an open goal. O'Grady's cross for Pedersen was flapped at by Camp but Woods couldn't guide the rebound home from 15 yards.
Two minutes of stoppage time was added to the first half but neither side could find a breakthrough.
Second half
The Reds made a change at the break as Tomaz Cywka came on for Jack Hunt, meaning Ryan McLaughlin would drop back to right-back.
Both Pedersen and Fraser sliced shots wide at either end in the early stages of the second half as the rain started to pour on Oakwell.
Eunan O'Kane fizzed a low effort wide a minute after Cywka's free-kick was blocked by the Cherries' wall.
The game was starting to stretch with less than half an hour on the watch and the home fans found their voice to back their side.
A real, real chance for the Reds fell for Pedersen after a lightning raid from O'Grady down the centre. The striker found the Norwegian in the box but he blazed over when one-on-one with 65 played. It was the perfect opportunity to break the deadlock.
From one end to the other, Surman had time from 25 yards but scuffed wide with the right boot. Chances at either end were increasing as both sides went for the winner.
The visitors went might close on 78 minutes as Ritchie curled a delightful effort in from 25 yards but it crashed off the crossbar and away off the line.
Jacob Mellis replaced Martin Woods for the Reds.
Steele was throwing his cap on the odd potshot but the wet surface meant it was harder than it looked.
With seven minutes left Peter Ramage had to be withdrawn through injury meaning Jean-Yves M'voto came on.
Another counter from the Reds saw McLaughlin fly forward but as he raced to the edge of the area, his shot was agonisingly blocked away.
Luke Steele pulled an unbelievable save out of the back as Ritchie pounced on a low cross at the near post only for the Barnsley number one to block.
Three minutes of stoppage time was shown by the fourth official.
When it seemed a point was wrapped up a corner for the visitors was eventually turned in by Cook.
