Grateful Gary Remembers Happy Reds Times

7 March 2014

Former Reds defender and Northern Ireland international Gary Fleming expresses his gratitude to the Barnsley fans in an exclusive interview with U Reds - our official matchday programme against Nottingham Forest.

Gary gave our matchday programme an exclusive interview ahead of seeing his two former sides meet at Oakwell tomorrow as special guest for the day.

"I still go down to Forest every so often and across to (Man) City, and, of course, back to Oakwell to watch Barnsley," said Gary.

"Barnsley was the best time of my career and it was the happiest. I came from Man City with Mel Machin. It was tough as we were struggling at the wrong end of the table. It was a big gamble on my part as well but once I was there, I loved it."

A regular with Northern Ireland, Gary went on to make 271 appearances for the Reds before damaging his knee ligaments, but he will always be thankful for the support he received up to and including his testimonial match.

"That was the whole purpose of that night, it was just great for him and a ‘thank you’ from me to the supporters. It was a really, really good night and the Club were fantastic with me.”
