The midfielder, who turns 20 in December, has penned a new two-year deal.
Abbott had originally penned a six-month contract in May, but will now remain at Oakwell until at least the summer of 2016.
Speaking to barnsleyfc.co.uk, Abbott said, “I’m very happy to sign the extension.
“When I got offered six months, I still wanted to hit the ground running. It looks like I’ve done that to get offered a two-year deal.
“I’ve probably stepped up more knowing I had to perform for a six-month period of time. I feel I’ve done well in the first few months of pre-season. But I’ll be doing exactly the same, I’ll be pushing and pushing to start in the first team. Whether I’m on the bench or coming on, it’s for the team.”
A second-year professional, Doncaster-born Abbott has been with the Reds since he was 16, prior to his two-year scholarship with the Academy.
Throughout pre-season so far, Abbott has impressed against the likes of Halifax, Al Ain, Hull and Manchester United XI, scoring one goal.
