He has subsequently joined Scottish Championship side Hamilton Academical FC who lie second in the division behind Dundee.
Scotland made 43 appearances for Barnsley, scoring eight goals including one on the last day of the 2012/13 season that helped ensure Barnsley's stay in the Championship.
