Barnsley U21s lost 4-0 to the hosts, Birmingham City, at a wet and windy Wast Hills. Hancox, Shinnie, Truslove and Ferguson each scored a goal for the Blues.
The match was an opportunity for Marcus Pedersen and Reuben Noble-Lazarus to get a full 90 minutes under their belt as well as Kelvin Etuhu getting a good hour in.
Five Under 18s featured for the Reds, including goalkeeper Elliot Chadderton who played the full 90 minutes.
Birmingham scored the opener just three minutes into the game through Mitch Hancox and four minutes later Andy Shinnie struck home their second from just inside the box.
A good save from Elliot Chadderton denied Birmingham City a third goal in the first half.
In the second half Marcus Pedersen had a shot blocked on the line as Barnsley looked to get back into the game.
The Blues did get a third with ten minutes of the match remaining after Shane Ferguson's cross found the head of Liam Truslove.
The scoring was completed two minutes later by the provider of the third goal, Ferguson, when he slid in at the far post to get on the end of a good ball across the face of goal.
