Doncaster v Reds: Full Time

15 February 2014

Doncaster Rovers 2 (Coppinger 45+1, 56)
Reds 2 (Proschwitz 27, 89)

Nick Proschwitz bagged two goals, including a late leveller, as the Reds earned a point at Doncaster Rovers in the South Yorkshire derby.

The Reds had taken the lead but a mistake and a deflection saw the hosts overturn Proschwitz's opener, but his clinical strike was only heading in one direction - the Donny goal.

It was a fairly bright start from Barnsley and Nick Proschwitz did well to force a corner with a shot from a tight angle after Chris O'Grady slipped in his team-mate down the left on three minutes.

James Coppinger tried his luck from a clearance but his 20-yard effort zipped wide of Steele's right-hand post after travelling through a crowd of bodies.

It was a fast and frantic tempo, as expected from a South Yorkshire derby.

On 27 minutes the Reds bagged a goal that the game so desperately needed when a loose ball heading towards Rovers 'keeper Johnstone was pounced on by Proschwitz - beating the 'keeper in the air and slamming home.

Paul Dickov was absolutely livid when his side weren't awarded a penalty for Wood's tackle on Husband - an incident from which Barnsley sprang a counter and had four players on Donny's two, but Digby's through-ball was thwarted by Keegan on 29 minutes, and the ricochet was prodded home by Proschwitz but the flag denied him a second goal.

Another goal was chalked off as Martin Cranie's header thundered in off the bar but everybody was perplexed as to why on 34 minutes.

Husband delivered a neat ball into the box but Khumalo's header was straight at Steele in the Barnsley goal.

The game was wide open just as the first half was coming to a close as both sides looked for another goal.

Rovers' leveller came in first-half stoppage time through James Coppinger, one of the easiest goals of his career. Steele came for a deep cross but dropped it into the path of Coppinger who tapped home.

Second half

Rovers fired in a vicious free-kick as Duffy's strike looked destined for the top corner but Steele got across and pulled off a wonderful save on 50 minutes.

The momentum was with the home side as they forced two corners, allowing Duffy to test Steele once more with a low shot after cutting in from a short corner.

The hosts took the lead as James Coppinger dug out a shot on 56 minutes that deflected past Steele who could only stand and watch the ball find the net.

Barnsley made their first change after the goal, as Jim O'Brien replaced Paul Digby.

Nick Proschwitz forced a brilliant save from Johnstone after his curling effort from the edge of the box was tipped away on 58 minutes.

Martin Woods latched onto a loose ball to unleash an absolute thunderbolt towards goal from 30 yards but his effort flashed wide of a stranded Johnstone's left-hand post.

Again Proschwitz brought the best out of Johnstone with a wonderful header that had to be parried away on 68 minutes. Moments later, Ramage rose highest to meet a deep cross and lopped a header onto the cross-bar.

Chris Brown's header from Husband's ball forward sailed over the bar as Rovers responded on the break down the left on 71 minutes.

Jordan Bowery was replaced by ex-Red David Cotterill on 78 minutes after the Villa loanee spent three minutes on the floor.

Barnsley's second change came on 80 minutes as Martin Woods was replaced by Paddy McCourt.

Things looked bleak for the Reds as a couple of half-hearted attempts failed to trouble Johnstone in the final five minutes.

Thankfully on 89 minutes Nick Proschwitz thundered in his and Barnsley's second after splendid work from O'Grady down the right. The big striker held off his man well and cross for his strike partner to hammer home a clinical finish from six yards.

Five minutes of stoppage time was indicated and the Reds were pressing for a winner. At the other end James Husband powered forward but his shot was nearer the corner flag than Barnsley's goal.
