Support local homeless people in the Rucksack Project

10 December 2014

Barnsley Football Club is a ‘drop point’ for item donations which will help homeless people through the winter months.

Barnsley Football Club and the BFC Community Sports & Education Trust are proud to support the Rucksack Project. Founded in November, 2009 in Bristol, the Rucksack Project was born out of a desire to simply help a homeless person who was sleeping rough during the freezing winter months. Over the past 5 years the initiative has grown and various organisations are now working together to help homeless people across the country. As we enter the cold winter months, the BFC Community Sports & Education Trust team will be taking to the streets of Barnsley to support those in need. We are kindly asking for the local community and our supporters to donate items which can be used to create Rucksack packages, which will be delivered to local homeless people in the Barnsley Hand Out Event taking place on Thursday 18th December.

What is the Rucksack Project?

The Rucksack Project is a worldwide movement that is slowly gathering momentum as more and more people decide to undertake a simple, but compassionate task to help those that are sleeping rough on our streets through these harsh winter months.

It's not about grand gestures; it's not about spending loads of money, or about making a big commitment. Anyone can help with our mission, because the project is not about one person trying to do a lot, but about the many each just doing a little to make a big difference in the world.

The idea is an incredibly simple one: Get a rucksack, sleeping bag, flask (fill with hot soup), spoon, gloves, hat, fleece, undies, socks and extra food, take it out and give it to a homeless person.

How can you help?

Barnsley Football Club has been designated an official ‘Drop Point’ for donations which will be used to create the Rucksacks. You can help by making a donation of any kind, whether it is a completed Rucksack full of the required items, or simple one off items which we can use to create the packs.  Required item donations are as follows:
  • A sleeping bag
  • A fleece or warm coat
  • Some thick socks
  • Clean underwear
  • Gloves
  • Wooly hat
  • Some non-perishable food, such as cans of soup (with ring pulls) and cereal bars
  • A thermos flask filled with hot soup and a spoon
You may have items around your home that you no longer need, or you may be also be able to find some good bargains in charity shops, and local shops.  If you have anything to donate, please bring it to the drop point and you will be helping local homeless people at a time they need it the most. You could also take part in the Barnsley Hand Out event which takes place on the 18th December, delivering the rucksacks to homeless people in the area. You can visit the Rucksack Project Barnsley Facebook page for more details on the hand out event.
