Reds Academy Youngster Gets England Call

25 April 2014

Barnsley Academy youngster Lewis Wardle has been called into the England Under 15s squad for their training camp in Burton.

The 15-year-old has been at Oakwell since he was nine and was delighted to get the call from the Three Lions.

"I am really looking forward to it but I didn't really expect it," said Lewis. "I didn't think I would get the chance because Barnsley isn't one of the biggest clubs like Manchester United or Liverpool."

England Under 15s will train at St George's in Burton from next Thursday, and Reds Academy Manager Ronnie Branson was delighted to see another youngster called up to the international stage.

"Lewis has done exceptionally well for himself and deserves his chance to train alongside some of the country's best," said Branson.

"We are always aiming to provide players for the first team at Barnsley Football Club, but when they are recognised at international level it's always a bonus."

Wardle, a midfielder, made his début at full-back for the Under 18s in the young Reds' final match of the season at Brighton.
