Leeds Utd U21s 3
Barnsley Under 21s edged a seven-goal thriller with Leeds United Under 21s in the Premier League Cup last night.
With the game heading for penalties, and an away trip to Bolton beckoning in the next round, Lewin Nyatanga's towering header in the penultimate minute of extra time saw the Reds through 4-3.
A first-half of very little action, although United's Dominic Poleon did fire his penalty wide before the break, it seemed neither side would break the deadlock on a freezing Oakwell night.
Dale Jennings gave the Reds the lead when his dipping shot deceived goalkeeper Alex Cairns and zipped into the far corner but Leeds levelled through Lewis Cook two minutes later.
Soon after Barnsley took the lead once more, this time Jason Scotland - one of three permitted overage players - firing home from 12 yards after turning his man inside out.
At 2-1, the game was soon turned on its head as the Whites struck twice through Luke Varney on 80 minutes and new signing Marius Zaliukas with little over eight minutes left.
On 85 minutes, a Dale Jennings free-kick was palmed into the air by Alex Cairns, leaving Lewin Nyatanga and Danny Rose to challenge for the ball on the line, and it seemed the defender got the final touch to make it all square.
Just as spot-kicks were looming, Reuben Noble-Lazarus whipped in a dangerous, in-swinging free-kick from the right that Lewin Nyatanga rose highest to greet and power his header low into the corner for 4-3.
