Ipswich 1 Reds 1

1 November 2013

Ipswich 1 (Murphy 41)
Reds 1 (O'Brien 70)

It's now three unbeaten for the Reds and it should have been three points for Barnsley in Ipswich. Jim O'Brien was the hero of the hour coming off the bench to really change the game and grab an equaliser with a fine finish.

It was a very quiet start at Portman Road and neither side mustered an attempt on goal in the first quarter of an hour.

Barnsley were looking after the ball well and Town's Tommy Smith had to receive treatment after colliding with Chris O'Grady on 14 minutes - which was the only real action of the opening exchanges.

Marcus Pedersen almost had a sniff on goal but Gerken was quick off his line to deny the Norwegian. At the other end Murphy couldn't get a delivery under control inside the area with 18 minutes played.

On 23 minutes, Tommy Smith beat Jack Butland to a sliced clearance but couldn't direct his header on goal. At the other end Paddy McCourt was thinking on his toes to try a 40-yard shot as he connected with Gerken's clearance but his shot was blocked.

Jack Butland had to react well to a deflected cross that would have crept in at the near post on 28 minutes as Ipswich came forward down the left.

On 41 minutes the deadlock was broken when Daryl Murphy lost his marker from an out-swinging corner and nodded a simple header into the bottom corner.

Jacob Mellis had picked up a knock and had to be replaced just before the break by Jim O'Brien.

Second half

Five minutes into the second half Dean Gerken pulled a save out of the top bag when he palmed Chris O'Grady's cracking strike out for a corner. Pedersen was the architect with a lovely lay-off for O'Grady who struck his effort from 20 yards.

Barnsley were enjoying all of the ball and had Ipswich camped in their own half as they searched for the equaliser.

On 68 minutes Marcus Pedersen tried to pick his spot with a curling right-footed effort but his edge-of-the-box effort sailed wide.

With 70 played Barnsley hauled themselves level and deservedly so. McCourt's cross from the left-hand side of the box was half-cleared into the path of O'Brien and he coolly half-volleyed with his side-foot into Gerken's right-hand corner.

Four minutes after the Reds' equaliser, Jason Scotland came on to face his former club as he replaced Marcus Pedersen. Not long after Scotland's introduction, the striker almost got in on goal but Berra tracked back well to deny the substitute.

The Reds' third and final substitute was made on 81 minutes as Kelvin Etuhu replaced Paddy McCourt.

Former Tractor Boy Scotland was causing all sorts of problems and should have scored a second for the Reds on 86 minutes. Kennedy's free-kick was controlled by the striker at the far stick but he drilled wide.

Two more chances fell the Reds' way, but Skuse got in the way of O'Grady's header before O'Brien failed to connect properly when one-on-one with Gerken.
