A New Era

17 May 2013

Barnsley Football Club today officially unveiled David Flitcroft as First-Team Manager, alongside Assistant Micky Mellon and Technical Coach, Martin Scott.

Speaking to the gathered press, Flitcroft said, "
It’s a new era. "The way we run and manage this club is key now.
It’s something we’re trying to do different. That’s why we wanted to sign. We’ve signed because things are looking right at the club.

"We’ve beaten some of the best the Championship had to offer. The management team made us successful last season. Micky Mellon and Martin Scott played a massive part in our upturn.

"The job of football management’s winning football matches.

"We’ve got to keep evolving. That team that displayed brilliant performances has got to evolve again.

"We’re good communicators and good with people. We’ll make sure we’ll attract the right type of footballers to this club.

"We know where we’re going. We’ve had lengthy discussions over the last two weeks – planning and preparing.

"We’ll look at different avenues to attract more fans to this club. The fans’ passion got us the job. The unity between the players and fans was key."

Assistant Manager Micky Mellon added, "I’ve known the boss for quite a few years now. Our relationship is that we trust each other. We know how each other work, along with Martin who I’ve known since I was 17.

The trio of Flitcroft, Mellon and Scott have put pen to paper on a one-year rolling contract, after guiding the Reds to safety in the Championship.

"He wants to know every day, what we think will make us better as a football club. He challenges us every day.

"We’ve always set small goals. Our objective now is just to win the next game. We’ll continue to do that. We won’t set any massive goals. We’re realistic and we know the Championship’s a very tough league.

"We’ll try and win the next game and then we’ll move on from there."

Technical Coach Martin Scott said, It’s been exciting. Obviously as the gaffer said from day one, how the lads reacted to us and the performance we got (at Peterborough) was brilliant."

"We can’t take away what the players have done for us. They’ve been absolutely outstanding.

"We are a team and the whole club’s working together now and that’s a massive positive for the future."

As far as recruitment is concerned, Reds boss Flitcroft continued, "We've been working hard behind the scenes.

Watch out for the full press conference later this evening on Barnsley Player.

"In football, your recruitment’s got to be right. If we lose a player, we lose a player. We lost John Stones and recovered, we lost Scott Golbourne but recovered. We’ve got to make sure people around can come in and do a job when we need them to."

"We can find talent and value for money. The product we got from Jacob Mellis this season – it excites me. But it’s no good recruiting this type of player if they’re not going to be influenced by good people.

"We know we’ve got to bring players in. We’ve been successful in bringing in Scott Golbourne, David Perkins, Scott Wiseman and Stephen Dawson. They’re going to be very good Championship players for the future.

"The first part of our recruitment strategy is to retain certain players then we’ll know where we’re going.
