Second-year scholar Rhys Oates continued his fine season with the young Reds as he netted the winner in Saturday's South Yorkshire derby at Sheffield Wednesday.

The striker lobbed the onrushing 'keeper with the outside of his boot to seal a derby victory for Chris Howarth's side on the hour mark.

Reds: Chadderton, Alderson, Smith, Bowland, Freeman, Shillitto, Abbott, Maris (McKnight), Sousa (Biggins), Oates, Pilkington (Simmons).

The Under 18s are next in action on the Oakwell Academy Complex against Derby this Saturday, kicking off at 11am.

"They pressed us in the second half but we did very well to stand strong."

As for goal-scorer Rhys, who has also played his hand for the Under 21s as well as bench duties for the first-team, Chris added, "He's tireless. He led the line for us and his hold-up play was decent whilst making some good runs to stretch the defence. He took his goal very well after having some shots saved.

"That was the fifth different formation we've tried which is great for the lads' development, they learning very well."

"We played very well," said Howarth, speaking to barnsleyfc.co.uk. "We tried a new system with three centre-halves and they worked very hard."
