Full Time: Reds v Bordeaux

25 July 2013

Reds 1 (Cywka 66)
Bordeaux 3 (Plasil 12, Sacko 50, Poundje 90+2)

Barnsley’s last home pre-season clash certainly whetted the appetite of the Oakwell crowd as Bordeaux came to town, outscoring the Reds 3-1 with two cracking goals from either side.

The Reds registered the first attempt of the match  but David Perkins could only drag his seventh-minute effort wide from the left-hand side of the box.

Bordeaux responded with two efforts that forced Steele into two saves before Plasil notched the opener on the end of a neat move with 12 played.

Barnsley came straight back at Bordeaux and a brilliant turn from O’Grady saw the frontman get into the box but his cross was cleared before Dagnall could latch on at the far post.

New signing Jean-Yves M’voto was looking strong in the air, but he made a great block on the deck to deny Plasil his and Bordeaux’s second.

As the first half drew to a close, the Reds were upping the tempo but were just lacking that clinical ball into the danger area.

Second half

After the break, and with ten changes for the Reds, they maintained their high tempo in search of a goal.

Five minutes into the second half Bordeaux doubled their lead as Sacko poked home after a great counter-raid from the visitors.

John Cofie showed neat footwork before firing over from 25 yards but Tomasz Cywka hauled his side back into it on 66 minutes with a cracking goal. When he seemed to be under too much pressure to let fly, he managed to fire a cracker into the top left-hand corner from 22 yards.

The momentum was with the Reds and it was  shame that Jason Scotland’s header, on the end of a splendid Noble-Lazarus cross, hammered the foot of the post.

Jennings and Cywka were looking bright for the Reds but the visitors wrapped up the night with a goal that was savoured by the crowd. Poundje sprinted 30 yards down the left before unleashing an incredible drive into the top corner.

All in all it was another excellent workout for David Flitcroft’s side, whose last pre-season match is on Saturday at Rotherham United.
