Cofie is 'Immense Talent' - Flitcroft

19 July 2013

Reds Manager David Flitcroft caught up with Barnsley Player after the Reds had just captured the signing of former Manchester United striker John Cofie this afternoon.

“John’s someone I’ve known a lot about, with me being in the Manchester area,” said Flitcroft.  “I used to watch a lot of games when I was at Rochdale – Man United, Man City, Bolton, Everton and Liverpool. It’s a real hotbed, the north-west, and over that time I came across John.

“I’ve seen him when he was at Burnley as a kid. He’s a player of immense potential and immense talent. He’s got great pace – great getaway pace – and he needed a home. He needs some guides to mentor him and a squad that he believes in to come and do his work.”

Born in Ghana, Cofie represented England at youth level and was snapped up by Manchester United as a youngster from Burnley.

Cofie: Signed one-year deal (with option for a second) this afternoon.

“He’s come to us late,” continued Flitcroft. “Like all players when they come late he’s been training on his own. John’s behind where we need him to be, we’ll catch him up but I don’t think he’ll be ready for the start of the season.

“There’s bags of potential that we’ve bought into.

“We’ve got a player who is hungry and wants to be a part of what we’re doing.

“Once we’d evaluated him over a week’s training, the decision was easy.”
