“Luckily we’ve got through and hopefully the apprehension and nerves are out of the way.”

In the second half we passed the ball 10, 15 yards and made chances – which is what we’re about.

Academy Coach Paul Heckingbottom was delighted that his side ‘dug in’ to earn the victory, “The lads did dig in, a lot of apprehension and nerves played their part first half.

There were a couple of scares for the Reds, with Jamie Moore smashing against his own post and Elliot Chadderton having to be brave in making two quality saves as the classy Roberts threatened the Barnsley backline. The Reds rattled the woodwork at the other end, though, with Maris clipping the exact same spot on the post on two occasions.

Shillito found a second after great work from George Smith down the left and Omari Alexander-Salmon pounced onto a Tom Williams delivery in the second-to-last minute to seal the tie.

After overcoming a few nerves early doors, the Reds eventually showed their class and fitness to overcome the Bulls.

The fixture had been postponed three times down in Oxford due to poor weather meaning the tie was switched to Oakwell giving Reds youngsters the chance to showcase their skills to the home faithful.

Barnsley Under 18s came from behind to beat in-form Oxford at Oakwell in the FA Youth Cup Third Round – at the fourth time of asking!
