Mellon on Victory in Brighton

3 December 2013

Reds Caretaker Manager Micky Mellon caught up with Barnsley Player following a fine 2-1 victory over Brighton at the Amex Stadium.

"Well, obviously, (I'm) delighted that we got the result," he said. "We want to dedicate that result to David Flitcroft, Martin Scott and Guy Proctor.

"Football's football but our relationship with those guys is for life.

"Hecky (Paul Heckingbottom) and Chris (Howarth) have done a great job, we've definitely found some gems in the Academy in terms of coaching.

"We showed the football world that we are prepared to fight.

"It's been an emotional few days. It's been tough. But we've kept as professional as possible, prepared the players and picked the team.

"The first 15 minutes we looked like a team adjusting to a new shape. We grew as a group, confidence came flooding back and we controlled the game for long, long spells.

"We wanted to keep the ball and we did that."

Paddy McCourt and Jacob Mellis got the goals - both in the second half - as the Reds more than matched a Seagulls side gunning for the top flight.

"We knew we had to get the first goal. I knew that. It was important to get the first goal. Confidence is going to be low if we're losing games and lost the Manager.

"They've had a tough couple of days. We want to improve and get better at certain things, and we will."
