Five Wins on the Spin for Young Reds

8 October 2012

Late penalty seals win

“We started slowly, and got dominated to be fair.” said Reds Academy Assistant Manager, Mark Burton, speaking exclusively to barnsleyfc.co.uk. “We went 1-0 down but we got going after the break.

George Maris and Brad Abbott got the goals – with the latter notching a brace for the young Reds.

Barnsley’s Under 18s made it five wins on the bounce after a late penalty gave them the edge over Coventry City.

After going down to a first-half Sky Blues goal, Brad Abbott restored parity with a long-range drive that squirmed under the ‘keeper before George Maris tapped home for 2-1. And after the hosts had clawed back the match, Abbott kept his cool from the spot on 86 minutes.

“We had a number of chances to put the game to bed.”

“It was a hardworking performance. Coventry are a decent side and the lads accept they have to perform better.

“We gave away a sloppy goal for 2-2. Both sides went for a winner and then Rhys Oates did well to win us a penalty.
