Burton on Under 21s

Barnsley's Head of Academy Coaching, Mark Burton, has told barnsleyfc.co.uk that he will stick with his and the club's philosophy on playing the 'right way'.

Speaking exclusively to barnsleyfc.co.uk after Monday's 2-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest, Burton said, "

The Under 21s have put in some impressive passing displays in recent weeks despite only picking up one win from their opening ten matches.

"I mean, when we played Middlesbrough last year at Under 18s level we beat them 3-0 and we had 458 passes – a 90% completion rate. Yesterday we had more but didn’t have that cutting edge. We hit crossbar twice, had one cleared off the line and missed chances. We started slow but we were superb to be fair. We played good possession football but that final piece of the jigsaw was lacking. To quote the magnificent Barcelona midfielder, Xavi, 'the result is the imposter in football' - that quote is particularly apt at development level.

Sean O’Driscoll came over after the match and he was very complimentary.

“We will keep doing this," he added. "It’s our philosophy. The lads have got to trust it and they are trusting it. We are creating chances and more than the opposition. They had a couple of chances as well but it’s not as though we aren’t creating. The lads have loads of touches of the ball and its making them better. We had an Under 19s side with Mido and Reuben Noble-Lazarus in there."
