U23s | REPORT: Leeds United 2-0 Barnsley

Yorkshire derby defeat for young Reds

18 November 2019

Barnsley U23s were beaten 2-0 by Leeds United in the Professional Development League on Monday afternoon.

Goals early in either half from Ryan Edmondson and Jordan Stevens were enough to settle the Yorkshire derby at Thorp Arch.

It was a fairly even contest, with opportunities at both ends, but it was the hosts who would prove to be clinical in the final third.

United got off to a flier and took the lead inside four minutes when Edmondson was on hand to finish first time from close range.

The Reds looked to respond and came close when Dylan Mottley-Henry tested Kamil Miazek with a curling effort from distance.

However, clear cut chances were few and far between, with neither goalkeeper particularly forced into strenuous work.

Tommy Willard and Alex Wollerton both fired dangerous crosses into the area, but no one of a Barnsley persuasion was able to latch onto a loose ball.

HALF-TIME: Leeds United 1-0 Barnsley

The visitors started brightly after the interval and were full of energy, pressing the Leeds defenders high up the pitch and forcing errors.

But when Stevens raced onto a headed clearance, he was able to double United’s advantage as he casually slotted past Harrison Davison-Hale.

It was a sucker punch for the Reds, who had looked more likely to get the next goal and they were almost rewarded for their endeavours on several occasions.

First, Harry Gagen powered a header just wide before Rudi Pache rose highest to meet Jordan Barnett’s corner, but saw his effort drift narrowly over the bar.

Clarke Oduor, orchestrating from midfield, burst forward at will as he looked to drag Barnsley back into the contest against his former club, but his attempts from distance were continuously blocked by a white shirt.

At the other end, Pascal Struijk had a header cleared off the line while Stevens clattered the upright with a thunderous drive.

Gagen almost reduced the arrears in stoppage time with a fizzing low strike that Miazek tipped wide, but the Reds were unable to find a way through.
