U23s | PREVIEW: Birmingham Vs Barnsley

4 January 2019

Barnsley U23s travel to Birmingham City on Saturday looking to continue their run of fine form from 2018.

Martin Devaney’s young Reds picked up seven points from their last three games before Christmas – including an impressive victory away to high-flying Leeds United in the Yorkshire derby.

Birmingham, meanwhile, top the Professional Development League North on goal difference to Burnley and Leeds, with all three teams on 30 points heading into the second half of the campaign.

The Blues have picked up ten points from their last four outings, which has been a tough run of fixtures with three of those games against teams in the top four.

Kyle McFarlane could prove to be the dangerman for Richard Beale’s side this weekend, with the 22-year-old striker currently on nine goals for the season in all competitions – seven of which have come in the league.

Birmingham came out on top in the last meeting with Barnsley as Josh Andrews’ late double secured a 2-1 victory back in October. Amir Berkovits had given the young Reds a first half lead at the Oakwell Training Complex, but Devaney’s side were unable to claim a result that their spirited performance deserved.

Saturday’s game kicks off at 11am and will be played at Wast Hills Training Ground.
