REDS RACE TO VICTORY AT CHELTENHAM

2 September 2023

Consecutive away wins registered by Neill Collins' side with a 2-0 triumph at Cheltenham Town in Sky Bet League One.

Second half goals from Devante Cole and Max Watters saw Barnsley take all three points from the Completely-Suzuki Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Reds came flying out of the blocks in what would prove to be an end-to-end first half, as John McAtee was sent running through on the right flank inside the first 10 seconds but his shot from an acute angle cleared the crossbar.

A few minutes later, Herbie Kane tried to lob Robins goalkeeper Luke Southwood who was well out of his goal, but the midfielder's effort dropped at least a foot too high.

For the next 15 minutes or so, the hosts began to test Barnsley, with Neill Collins' side having to rely on the abilities of 'keeper Liam Roberts.

He first parried a low strike around his near post as Rob Street threatened, before an outstanding one-handed save to his right to thwart Lewis Freestone's cracking header and then with 25 minutes played, he was low down to his right again to turn away Will Goodwin's diving header.

Having weathered that storm, Barnsley came on strongest towards the end of the opening 45 and after Devante Cole's brilliant finish, one-on-one was ruled out for what looked a close offside call, Jack Shepherd's brilliant header in a second phase after a corner cannoned off the post.

HALF TIME: Cheltenham 0-0 Barnsley

Whilst the second period wasn't as competitive, it went far smoother for the Reds as their quality began to show against the side at the bottom of the division.

After a couple of dangerous Reds attacks were snuffed out at the start of the half, Barnsley forged ahead with a clinical counter raid.

From Chelteham's own corner kick, the Reds headed clear and a quartet of players bombed up the other end of the pitch as first McAtee picked out Nicky Cadden and his slid pass into the onrushing Cole was inch perfect for our number 44 to finish low with precision, first time into the bottom left corner.

That was his sixth goal from six league games so far this season.

We could have another when Nicky Cadden's missile on the volley cracked off the outside of the post.

The hosts kept plugging away, with Roberts making another terrific one-handed stop to rebuff another Street effort as he charged into the box. Whilst the Reds were much more comfortable in the second 45, the game remained in the balance until stoppage time arrived.

After a number of substitutes for both sides, it was Collins' changes that came to fruition. With Aiden Marsh played in by Watters, the homegrown youngster saw his shot parried after some neat footwork, but Watters pounced to slam home the rebound from the tightest of angles, and put the game to bed.

The Reds move onto 10 points and up the table to 8th with this win.

FULL TIME: Cheltenham 0-2 Barnsley

Roberts, Cotter (de Gevigney), Williams, Łopata, Shepherd, Cadden, Kane, Russell, Phillips (Chapman), Cole (Marsh), McAtee (Watters).

Unused: Killip, McCart, Nejman.
