REDS FIGHT BACK TWICE TO EARN DRAW AGAINST FLEETWOOD

28 October 2023

An 89th minute Corey O'Keeffe header rescued a point for Barnsley in a game they dominated largely without reward.

After going behind twice at Oakwell this afternoon, Neill Collins' side recovered on both occasions and extended their unbeaten run to five matches.

In miserable conditions it was the away side who came out of the blocks better. First to loose balls in midfield, and this helped them take an early lead, when after they'd won possession on halfway, a miscued pass spooned up off a Reds defender and perfectly into the path of Junior Qiutirna who slotted home - unmarked - from four yards out.

But less than five minutes later, Barnsley were level.

With Fleetwood stopper Jay Lynch upending Devante Cole inside the box, the referee awarded a spot kick and despite seeing Lynch save his effort from 12 yards, Cole put away the rebound, netting his 11th goal of the season.

The rest of the first half saw the Reds pepper the visitors' goal, with the likes of John McAtee, Adam Phillips and Barry Cotter firing wide from in and around the box, whilst Maël de Gevigney looked close to forcing home a corner but it was scrambled off the line by Ola Lawal.

On a rare venture forward, Fleetwood retook the lead.

With Jordan Willams adjudged to have fouled his man, the Cod Army had a free-kick 20 yards from goal. Up stepped Quitirna who curled home a spectacular effort, giving Ben Killip no chance, doubling his and Fleetwood's tally for the afternoon.

Just before the break, Herbie Kane saw a wonderful shot cannon back off the crossbar, with the Reds going into the interval a goal behind.

HALF TIME: Barnsley 1-2 Fleetwood

The pressure on the away side's goal continued after the break, with Nicky Cadden blazing one over from just inside the box, and de Gevigney similarly shooting over after another barrage of Reds attacks.

Cadden then bent a free-kick towards goal that Lynch could only parry, and after the ball looked to have been handled by Lawal, Fleetwood managed to clear.

The assault waned somewhat after an injury to Jamie McCart, with the defender's head bandaged up. A number of subs were introduced, and a change of shape as Collins looked to force an equaliser.

It came in the 89th minute. A wonderful pick-out by Kane, who'd see one of those subs in O'Keeffe ghosting in at the far post, and the wing-back nodded home the leveller from six yards out.

A recovered point then, as the Reds completed an unbeaten month of October, ahead of next weekend's Emirates FA Cup first round.

FULL TIME: Barnsley 2-2 Fleetwood

Killip, Cotter (O'Keeffe), Williams, de Gevigney, McCart, Cadden (Dodgson), Kane, Russell (Jaló), Phillips (J.Benson), McAtee (Watters), Cole.

Unused: Flavell, Shepherd.
