WEST BROMWICH ALBION PREVIEW

4 May 2022

This Saturday sees the Reds head to the West Midlands in what is our final Sky Bet Championship assignment of the 2021/22 season.

A challenging season is coming to a close. Despite a brief upturn in both performances and results through February and into March, the last eight fixtures resembled far too many others in this most testing of campaigns.

This current long run without a win is the third of its kind. Eight without success now, going into our final game this weekend. That’s after two separate 13-game winless runs earlier in the season, which were only disrupted by the one win, against fellow-strugglers Derby County.

Just five other victories to speak of, sadly, and a real lack of goals. The Reds have only scored more than the one goal in a match, once, in the last 12 games. Whilst there have been weaknesses elsewhere, it’s clear that an inability to create and take chances has been the key issue throughout the entire campaign.

And so, it’s 24th, bottom of the division where we will rest at the conclusion of the season, following our final clash of the campaign away at The Hawthorns on Saturday, as we take on West Bromwich Albion in a 12.30pm kick-off.

In our most recent fixture, our last of the season on home soil against Preston North End last weekend, Barnsley took an early lead when homegrown youngster Aiden Marsh bagged on his full Sky Bet Championship debut.

MARSH 12.jpg

The Monk Bretton-born forward was first to a Victor Adeboyejo pull back to crash home a goal that he celebrated wildly, but that’s where the joy ended on Saturday afternoon just gone. As North End, backed by a noisy away end were the latest side to take all three points at Oakwell.

Goals from Daniel Johnson (x2) and Emil Riis Jakobsen sealed our third straight home defeat, and the second of interim head coach, Martin Devaney’s short-term tenure.

To The Hawthorns then, and an encounter with a side who’ve underachieved themselves this season. That’s despite them snapping up Valérien Ismaël, some of our backroom staff and captain at the time, Alex Mowatt last summer.

Big Val didn’t last long, leaving the Baggies in a pretty healthy-looking 5th position upon his dismissal. He was replaced by veteran manager Steve Bruce who hasn’t managed to add another promotion tilt to his CV. But he has settled them down somewhat, and they obviously come into this fixture as huge favourites.

They head into Saturday’s season finale in 10th position. At least four places lower than they’d have liked, which adds further questions to the change in management.

Albion are unbeaten in their last six home fixtures. In fact, their home record this season could belong to one of the promotion-chasers. Only three defeats at The Hawthorns all season. It’s their form on the road that’s cost them following last term’s relegation from the Premier League.

Only Sheffield United have a better defensive record at home this season, so for a Reds side struggling to find the net generally, Saturday could well be a long afternoon.

But it has been 15 years since Barnsley lost at this particular venue. We’ve drawn on our most recent couple of visits. Our last trip here saw us race into a 2-0 lead thanks to a delightful Cauley Woodrow brace. But Albion pegged us back to claim a point late on.

The referee this weekend is Leigh Doughty. This will be his third Reds fixture of the season having overseen the two draws with Stoke City earlier in the campaign.

REDS WELL-BEATEN BY BAGGIES IN SEASON FINALE

7 May 2022

Barnsley's season officially came to an end with a comfortable defeat at The Hawthorns this afternoon.

A pair of West Bromwich Albion goals in either half saw off a makeshift Barnsley side here in the West Midlands.

The Baggies dominated the opening 45, as expected, but they didn't cause the Reds too much concern in the early stages.

Some persistent wing-play down the right flank saw Matt Phillips and Darnell Furlong testing the Barnsley backline here and there, but both Jason Sraha and Jasper Moon, respectively, were on-hand to clear any potential danger.

Defender Dara O'Shea bulleted a near post header over the crossbar from an Adam Reach inswinging corner kick, before Reach himself volleyed over the bar at the far post.

Reds forays forward were few and far between, but despite the home side looking the more likely to take the lead, it was difficult to see where such a goal was coming from.

But then the officials made a decision that raised eyebrows to say the least, as Clarke Oduor was adjudged to have tripped Jayson Molumby inside the box. It looked - to this reporter, at least - a perfectly-timed tackle by the Barnsley wing-back.

Referee Leigh Doughty awarded a penalty, and up stepped Karlan Grant to send Jack Walton the wrong way, giving the hosts a fortunate lead.

But West Brom quickly doubled it, with Reach lobbing the outcoming Walton from the edge of the box, following a routine kick from the Albion 'keeper David Button.

HALF-TIME: WBA 2-0 Barnsley

The Reds saw Cauley Woodrow test Button early in the second half, before Will Hondermarck fizzed a low cross in that only just evaded Aiden Marsh who was sliding in towards the penalty spot.

But Albion made it 3-0 six minutes into the second period as with the Reds' six yard box packed, trying to defend a low ball into the centre, the ball was slipped onto the left and an unmarked Matt Clarke was there to slot home from eight yards at Walton's near post.

Three became four just a few minutes later as Grant nipped between the centre backs to finish coolly beyond the onrushing Walton, inside the near post once more.

Callum Styles had been bright enough for the Reds and he sent a tame effort straight at the goalkeeper after linking nicely with Marsh on the edge of the West Brom box.

The referee gave Albion a second penalty when Liam Kitching made a clumsy tackle just inside the box, but Walton got a strong hand to divert the spot-kick behind, and thus deny Grant a hat-trick.

The lively Grady Diangana blasted a low effort just wide, shooting across Walton as the West Midlanders looked to make the most of their final game of the season, against a patched-up Reds side who were struggling with the basics by this stage.

A late opening saw substitute Victor Adeboyejo blast a close-range effort well clear of the bar when he had better options to the left of him.

Barnsley supporters, over 600 of them, were in full voice all afternoon at The Hawthorns. Their backing this season as a whole, deserved much more than they often witnessed on the road.

And so the whistle blew on this game - another Reds defeat - and called time on a miserable campaign for all concerned with Barnsley Football Club.

FULL-TIME: WBA 4-0 Barnsley

Walton, Hondermarck (Benson), Moon, Sraha, Kitching, Oduor (Bremang), Helliwell, Wolfe, Styles, Marsh, Woodrow (c) (Adeboyejo).
