COVENTRY CITY PREVIEW

24 September 2020

After our humbling against Premier League giants Chelsea in the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday evening, attention now returns to Sky Bet Championship action where Barnsley are aiming to pick up their first points of the new campaign.

Disappointing defeats against Luton Town and Reading were somewhat masked by our cup progress, but the onus in now on the Reds to lay down a marker and hit a run of form if they are to avoid a start similar to the previous season.

Despite coming away from the opening two fixtures empty handed, performances haven’t been particularly bad. In fact, prior to Michal Helik’s dismissal at the Madejski Stadium, Barnsley were in control and, if you were of a betting persuasion, might have lumped on the Reds leaving Berkshire with at least a share of the spoils.

It was, however, a familiar story – much like in midweek at Stamford Bridge, where we were culpable of missing gilt-edged opportunities and eventually punished for it.

The visit of Coventry City this weekend is our first encounter against a newly promoted team this term and, with due respect to Wycombe Wanderers and our Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United, Mark Robins’ side perhaps pose the biggest threat out of the three.

Promoted from League One as champions, the Sky Blues bolstered their ranks with the arrivals of Gustavo Hamer and Callum O’Hare, while Tyler Walker joined from fellow Championship outfit Nottingham Forest.

Robins also opted to utilise the loan market, with Leo Østigård, Ryan Giles, and Ben Sheaf arriving from Premier League sides Brighton and Hove Albion, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Arsenal, respectively.

City were impressive in their last outing at home to Queens Park Rangers a week ago. A 3-2 victory at their temporary home, St Andrews, got them off the mark for the new season as they aim to consolidate in their first campaign back in the second tier since 2012.

It’s worth noting that Barnsley haven’t lost at home to the Sky Blues in the league since August 2009, with Leon Best and Clinton Morrison on target for City either side of a Rob Kozluk red card.

Roughly a month later, Robins took over the reigns on Grove Street and helped steer the Reds clear of relegation before leaving the club in 2011.

The two sides shared the spoils last time out as Barnsley secured another valuable point in their bid to win promotion from League One in March 2019. It was a franetic end-to-end encounter in the blistering South Yorkshire sun and no doubt supporters tuning in on iFollow will be hoping for a similar spectacle this weekend.

Lining up for the visitors that day was none other than Luke Thomas, who went onto score a terrific equaliser just after the hour mark. It was enough to prompt the Reds to bring him to Oakwell from parent club Derby County as the flying forward became the first recruit of our 19/20 pre-season, with Conor Chaplin arriving shortly after from City.

GROVE STREET COVENTRY

21 September 2020

Both played their parts in a tremendous great escape last term and Thomas has certainly caught the eye with his early season form this time around, particularly at Middlesbrough where he sliced the hosts’ defence apart with two magnificent assists.

In his Grove Street Q&A, as submitted by supporters, the 21-year-old discusses his targets for the season and the future – one of which is to hit double figures for assists this campaign. A more than realistic goal, if he continues at his current trajectory.

REDS HELD BY COVENTRY

26 September 2020

Barnsley picked up their first point of the Sky Bet Championship season with a 0-0 draw at home to Coventry City.

In a game with limited opportunities, the Reds perhaps just shaded it but were unable to break down a resilient visiting backline.

The first half was a tight affair, with few clear-cut chances for either side. Similar tactics from both teams saw a great deal of aggressive pressing, with both sides trying to play out from the back.

A bright start from the hosts resulted in a third minute free kick on the edge of the Coventry box, but the shot from Callum Styles was straightforward for the keeper. The Reds’ centre halves faced some early pressure from City, with Michael Sollbauer and Mads Andersen dealing well with a series of crosses from the flanks.

Good early pressing from the Barnsley front line almost yielded the opening goal, as pressure from Cauley Woodrow sent Jordan Williams clear down the left flank. His pull back found Luke Thomas, but the low shot went narrowly wide of the right-hand post.

Shortly after, the visitors were millimetres from taking the lead. A whipped corner kick found the head of Leo Ostigard, whose header crashed away off the bar. Fortunately for the Reds, none of his teammates could turn the loose home, with the rebound ending up high in the top tier.

Midway through the first half, a wonderful through ball from Thomas, so often the Reds’ creative spark, was inches from finding Kilian Ludewig as he threatened to burst clear on goal.

Barnsley’s defensive line looked strong throughout the first period, with a crucial block from Andersen preventing a strong shot testing Jack Walton.

Just before half time, a Barnsley corner saw a strong coming together between Ostigard and Andersen, with the both ending up in the advertising boards in challenging for the ball. Fortunately, both were unscathed and able to continue.

HALF-TIME: Barnsley 0-0 Coventry City

The second half saw Barnsley create the majority of openings, with the Sky Blues sitting deep and looking to counter-attack. A switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation allowed Conor Chaplin and substitute Dominik Frieser to exploit space out wide, with fellow replacement Elliot Simoes attacking the box with late midfield runs.

A series of Coventry corners almost saw the away side take the lead, with successive headers passing narrowly wide of the Barnsley net. On 48 minutes, excellent work from Chaplin on the right wing saw a floated cross aimed at Frieser. However, the ball was always a little too high for the Austrian substitute, whose effort skewed wide.

Skipper Alex Mowatt was determined to grab the game by the scruff of the neck, picking the ball up in midfield and driving purposefully towards goal. Having nutmegged a Coventry defender, the Reds’ captain curled an effort just wide. Barnsley continued to create openings, with more good play by Chaplin freeing Woodrow, but the first-time effort was again over the bar.

Barnsley’s chance creation was certainly improved in the second half, as Simoes and Woodrow saw successive shots whisk narrowly wide of the away side’s goal. A deft touch by Patrick Schmidt almost set up Woodrow to win it at the death, with the striker’s shot well saved by the goalkeeper.
