22 December 2020

Festive football arrives on Saturday as we prepare for a Yorkshire derby clash this Boxing Day!

The Reds welcome West Yorkshire outfit Huddersfield Town to Oakwell on Saturday 26 December in a 3pm kick-off, looking to get back on the winning trail.

Our 500-mile round-trip to Swansea last weekend saw us return home from Wales empty-handed, putting an end to a three-game winning sequence.

Defeated 2-0 by the Swans in a very forgettable performance wasn't how the Reds wanted to enter the Christmas period, but a week-long break for the first time in a long while will hopefully re-energise Valérien Ismaël's young side.

The Frenchman and his players will be rested and refreshed ahead of Saturday's meeting with the Terriers, hoping to earn themselves a victory that would push them back into the top half of the Sky Bet Championship table.

Boxing Day could also see the return of defender Jordan Williams who hasn't started for the Reds since mid-October owing to injury. There will also be a likely recall for Callum Styles who missed the Swansea trip through suspension. But Aapo Halme and Ben Williams remain sidelined until next year.

Our visitors on Saturday come into the game off the back of a fine 2-0 home win over high-flying Watford, and have kept four clean sheets in their last five fixtures; the anomaly being a 5-0 hammering down in Bournemouth.

Their away form tailed off quite early however, with Carlos Corberan's side failing to win on any of their last five road trips.

Recently, the Spaniard lost the services of Josh Koroma to injury, a player who'd really come to life this season; his missing will be a blow for the Terriers. But in goalkeeper Ryan Schofield, Town have one of the standout young performers this season, and locally-born striker Frazier Campbell is always one to watch up front.

Both sides won on home soil in the two fixtures last season. The Terriers won 2-1 at the John Smith's Stadium in October of 2019 whilst in January of this year at Oakwell, the same scoreline saw the Reds run out winners with Alex Mowatt and Conor Chaplin on target.

In a fixture that is 110-years-old this year, it's our West Yorkshire rivals with the historical edge in head-to-head meetings. The Terriers holding 32 victories to the Reds' 27.

But in the last 32 years the Reds have only lost league meeting at this level on home soil. That being a 1-0 defeat in 2012, a match only remembered by Reds fans for Mido making his only Barnsley appearance.

26 December 2020

Michal Helik’s double, including a dramatic late winner, was enough for Barnsley to complete another turnaround victory, this time over Huddersfield Town in an entertaining Boxing Day derby at Oakwell.

With the scores level deep into added time, Helik reacted quickest after the ball fell to him following Herbie Kane’s long throw to net the winner and spark jubilation among the home players.

The result was Valérien Ismaël’s ninth win in his 14th game in charge of the Reds, and provides the perfect tonic to the defeat in South Wales last weekend.

Ismaël had previously talked about his frustrations regarding his side’s recent tendency to concede first, and it seems issues may still remain in that area as the visitors drew first blood.

With just 13 minutes on the clock, the Terriers worked a tidy short corner routine to Carel Eiting, who flicked in a cross that was nodded home by Rarmani Edmonds-Green.

However, another hallmark of recent Barnsley games is the Reds’ ability to strike back, and this time the equaliser took just eight minutes to arrive, in somewhat similar fashion to the visitors’ opener.

Matty James’ cross eventually found its way to Helik in the centre of the box, and following a brief moment of doubt, referee David Webb confirmed the Pole’s header had indeed crossed the line prior to being cleared.

Honours even was a fair reflection of an open first half, although Cauley Woodrow was narrowly stopped from giving the home side the lead a minute before the break when his shot was deflected wide.

HALF-TIME: Barnsley 1-1 Huddersfield Town

Clear-cut chances were a little harder to come by in a stickier second half, but opportunities did present themselves to both sides.

Just two minutes after half-time, Edmonds-Green almost netted his second but was unable to connect with Juninho Bacuna’s cross at the back post.

With the match finely poised, the introduction of Victor Adeboyejo, scorer of the winning goal at Oakwell last time out, almost made a difference and it took some goalkeeping heroics to ensure the scores remained level.

Adeboyejo’s acrobatic overhead kick was pushed away by Ryan Schofield, seconds before the Terriers stopper denied Conor Chaplin.

Time ticked down and a draw seemed the most likely outcome, until Helik’s dramatic intervention saw the Reds to their third successive 2-1 home victory.

FULL-TIME: Barnsley 2-1 Huddersfield Town

REDS XI: Walton (GK), Styles, Andersen, Brittain, Woodrow (Miller), Chaplin (Thomas), Sollbauer, Mowatt (c) (Palmer), Frieser (Adeboyejo), Helik, James (Kane).

Unused: Schmidt, Palmer, Oduor, Miller, Moon, Collins (GK).
