COVENTRY CITY PREVIEW

15 April 2021

The Reds kick-off a period of three matches in seven days when they travel to the second city this Sunday to take on the Sky Blues!

It's a week of football that could well shape the Reds' destiny, with nine points on offer and the potential then, to ward off the threat of the side chasing them for that final playoff place.

Whilst it's going to be a hectic week, with two away trips finished off with a South Yorkshire derby back at Oakwell, there will have been eight days between Sunday's encounter with Coventry and our last game against Middlesbrough.

Plenty of opportunity has been taken to rest up and recharge, as well as spending precious time out on the training ground back at base; Valérien Ismaël's men will be fully prepared for whatever is thrown at them down the home straight of this 20/21 campaign.

That clash against Boro last weekend saw the Reds return to winning ways on home soil, and backed up the Easter Monday success away at Luton Town, to solidify our position in the top six.

Second half goals from the captain, Alex Mowatt and in-form striker Daryl Dike earned the Reds a 2-0 home victory against Neil Warnock's expensively assembled outfit.

It was another battling display, with the opposition refusing to keep the ball on the deck, but the Reds proved too strong once again, and after forging ahead there was only ever going to be one winner, picking up another three points.

The Reds remain five points ahead of Reading, who play Cardiff City on Friday night at the Madejski Stadium.

That Boro win was our 21st victory in the Sky Bet Championship this term.

To put that into some kind of context, Danny Wilson's 1996/97 squad managed 22 wins on their way to the Premier League.

Back on the road at the start of this new week then, and further opportunity to impact the history books here at Oakwell.

The Reds have already racked up 10 away wins this season, the first time ever at this level that this has been achieved. And they've won the last six in a row, another club record.

But they travel on Sunday to take on a club who they very rarely beat away from home, in Coventry City. However, they're not based in Coventry this season.

We have met the Sky Blues away from home on 30 previous occasions, winning only two of them.

Those victories coming in 1921 and the last one, in 1923. Nearly a hundred years ago!

But we won't be playing in Coventry, as the Sky Blues are still in Birmingham for this season, so it's a second trip of the season to St. Andrew's, where the Reds' record is pretty decent.

We will be coming up against a couple of familiar faces though, with Mark Robins still in charge of Coventry, where he's done a remarkable job in often testing conditions.

The former Reds boss is approaching 250 games in charge of the club, having led them out of League's Two and One, as well as lifting the Football League Trophy.

He is this season attempting to save the Sky Blues from the drop, with his side currently occupying 21st position ahead of tonight's crunch clash with Rotherham United.

In the City midfield, and captain of the club since his January arrival is Matty James.

The elegant but uncompromising midfielder spent much of the first half of the season on-loan with the Reds and is someone that really had an impact on not just the club itself, but the people within it.

Having worked under Ismaël and played alongside most of the Reds' players, if anyone knows what this Barnsley side is about, it's Jamo.

It's a chance also, for Reds striker Conor Chaplin to face his former club. The 24-year-old forward needs just one more goal to reach 50 in his career so far.

There was nothing to separate the two sides when we met in the reverse fixture, way back in September of last year. A dour 0-0 draw at Oakwell.

REDS LOSE AT COVENTRY

18 April 2021

Barnsley beaten by the Sky Blues away from home.

It was a game to forget for Valérien Ismaël's side at St. Andrew's, with a lerthargic and disjointed performance punished by the battling hosts.

Goals from Dom Hyam early in the first half and then substitute Matty Godden late in the second saw off an out-of-sorts Barnsley who failed to add to their impressive away run.

A Reds side showing just the one change from the victory against Middlesbrough last time out, as Conor Chaplin came in for Dominik Frieser, were quickly undone by the Sky Blues.

After threatening in the early stages with balls in behind the Barnsley backline, one such foray forward resulted in a throw-in to Coventry, deep by the corner flag, which they took quickly and Max Biamou smartly pushed the ball back towards the edge of the box for Dom Hyam to thrash home into the net, beating Brad Collins at the left-hand post.

The Reds didn't respond and could have been further behind when struggling to deal with the many long-throws from the left flank, but thankfully, the ball didn't sit kindly for the home side.

Romal Palmer saw a weak header comfortably saved midway through the half as the Reds finally began to show their own teeth on a sunny afternoon in the second city.

But Hyam should have doubled his tally for the game but somehow headed over, unmarked from yet another Sam McCallum long-throw.

There was a late chance for Cauley Woodrow, as Daryl Dike and Chaplin linked well to release the Reds' number 9 but whilst the striker got there just ahead of the outrushing 'keeper, he stabbed it just wide.

HALF-TIME: Coventry 1-0 Barnsley

A number of players couldn't have complained had they been hauled off at the break, but it was Chaplin who made way, as Carlton Morris emerged from the tunnel for the second half.

But the change made little difference in the event, with the Reds' football struggling to break down a very hard working and resolute Sky Blues defence and midfield.

Despite further introdutions, the equaliser didn't look any closer to coming, but it was Frieser with the first shot on target in the second half, as the Austrian sub skipped into the box after good play by Callum Styles but shot straight at the 'keeper.

There was a lot of possession for Ismaël's side, but very little invention, and the only further opportunity came in the final 10 minutes as Daryl Dike blasted against the upright, again from an acute angle following a well-flighted Alex Mowatt pass to the far post.

The hosts though killed the game on the counter-attack, when Godden - who looked offside - curled home from just inside the box, as the Reds' six-game winning run away from home came to an end.

FULL-TIME: Coventry 2-0 Barnsley

Collins, Brittain, Sibbick, Helik, Andersen, Styles, Mowatt, Palmer (Halme), Woodrow (Frieser), Chaplin (Morris), Dike.

Unused: Walton, J.Williams, Sollbauer, Moon, Oduor, Adeboyejo.
