PREVIEW: Barnsley Vs Birmingham City

The inside track on the Reds against Blues

11 February 2020

A quick turnaround for the Reds - back in Sky Bet Championship action, back home and here's the preview as we welcome Blues to Oakwell.

After Barnsley were held by local rivals Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend, Gerhard Struber has a rapid opportunity to get the three points his side ought to have taken on Saturday.

The Reds went behind after an unkind ricochet saw the Owls in to score early doors before an error at the other end was punished by top scorer, Cauley Woodrow. The 1-1 draw did nothing for Barnsley's slim survival chances, with results once again stretching the gap from them and safety.

It's now back to eight points with the Reds' recent form returning to pre-Struber and if they're to manage to pull off a famous escape, Tuesday night's home game needs to be the start of a revival.

With Austrian duo Sami Radlinger and Marcel Ritzmaier still missing for the forseeable future, Struber will have the same squad at his disposal, but the substitute appearances of one or two might have tempted him into making changes for Blues' visit.

Both Mike Bähre and in particular, Callum Styles made a positive impact against Wednesday and they'll be in contention against Birmingham.

Struber alluded to that when both he and goalkeeper Brad Collins faced the press ahead of the Blues clash and subscribers to iFollow Barnsley can watch their pre-match interviews by clicking the linked videos below.

Our opponents, in stark contrast, come into Tuesday evening's contest in much better form than the Reds. They're currently on an eight-game unbeaten run in all competitions and are fresh off a superb 3-1 away victory at Bristol City last Friday night.

Led by the Spaniard once of Swansea City and Oxford United, Pep Clotet, Blues have climbed away from the relegation trouble the Reds are embroiled in, sat 15th going into this one and some 15 points ahead of Barnsley.

Struber Pre-Birmingham

Another side, like Sheffield Wednesday, who are rammed with experience in their ranks, and a few familiar faces too.

Barnsley-born, former Reds captain Marc Roberts is enjoying his third season with the St Andrews-based club having left his hometown club in the summer of 2017. He's joined at Birmingham by two former loanees in Dan Crowley and Gary Gardner. And Scott Hogan was once a Reds trialist some eight years ago now.

They also have one of the nation's most highly-rated young footballers in their squad. 16-year-old Jude Bellingham is the club's youngest ever player and a first team regular, with his performances gaining all manner of attention.

Defeated by Blues back in August, that 2-0 defeat in the second city was, however, Barnsley's first loss against Birmingham in six fixtures, going back to 2013.

The Reds have enjoyed 2-0, 3-0 and even 5-0 victories in this particular fixture in the last few years, and back in 2000 they thumped Blues 4-0 at St Andrews in the playoffs.

But historically, they are second best in a clash that was first played in 1898 when Blues were then known as Small Heath. The Reds lost that game, one of 38 that they have done, winning 24 themselves with 20 games ending in a draw.

With it being a midweek fixture, this game is available to UK and overseas subscribers to our video streaming service, iFollow Barnsley. Four-camera footage with commentary from Matt Bailey and Wayne Goodison, LIVE from Oakwell and by clicking HERE you can order your match pass.

Match Reports

REPORT: Barnsley 0-1 Birmingham City

11 February 2020

Barnsley were beaten 1-0 by Birmingham City in the Sky Bet Championship on Tuesday evening.

Scott Hogan’s second half strike was enough to seal all three points for Blues on a cold night at Oakwell.

The Reds started the game brightly and came close to opening the scoring when Conor Chaplin burst down the left flank and fired in a dangerous low cross but couldn’t quite find Jacob Brown in the middle.

Cauley Woodrow then took aim from distance after picking up a loose ball, but his effort whistled just wide of the mark.

Following a Birmingham corner, Barnsley launched a quick counter-attack with Brown teeing up the marauding Jordan Williams, whose low strike was well saved by Lee Camp.

Next to try his luck was Callum Styles, making his first league start of the season, as he aimed for the top corner but saw his attempt parried behind by Camp.

After Brown beat three City players with intricate footwork, the Reds’ forward drilled a low shot towards goal, but again saw his effort saved by the travelling ‘keeper.

The Blues had their first real effort of the game seven minutes before half-time, when new loan signing Hogan raced through but was denied by Brad Collins.

As the half drew to a close, Chaplin chanced his arm from the edge of the box, but the ball fizzed wide.

HALF-TIME: Barnsley 0-0 Birmingham City

In a drab second half, the visitors took the lead when Jude Bellingham won possession on the touchline and fed Hogan inside the box and to the right, who curled into the top corner with 15 minutes left.

Barnsley pushed forward in search of an equaliser and Woodrow blasted one from distance that deflected over the bar.

The Reds’ hitman then drilled a ball across the face of goal, but no one was able to turn it home.

Despite their best efforts, the hosts were unable to find that elusive goal and remain 23rd in the table.
