PREVIEW: Barnsley Vs Accrington

8 March 2019

The Reds welcome Stanley to Oakwell this Saturday for a 3pm kick-off in Sky Bet League One and we've got it covered in our big match preview.

After another stunning performance last time out - the Reds eased to a 3-0 victory in Southend on Saturday lunchtime - Daniel Stendel's side are back on home soil this weekend with Accrington the visitors to Oakwell.

That success in Essex came despite losing Jacob Brown to a red card in the 35th minute of the game. In the second half, Barnsley came out and blew away their hosts regardless of their light number.

There are no further injury issues for the Reds going into this one. Ben Williams returning to full training this week, but following an FA charge, Cameron McGeehan will sit out the next three games.

Our opponents on Saturday arrive in mixed form of late, with just one victory in their last four league fixtures. They went down 2-1 to Blackpool in midweek which was their fourth consecutive home game.

You have to go back to December 22 for their last away win. That was a 3-0 thumping of Plymouth Argyle.

Accrington celebrate

Stanley are currently 15th in Sky Bet League One and just four points above the dreaded relegation zone.

Last season's League Two champions, Accy are led by former Rochdale boss John Coleman. The 56-year-old Liverpudlian is enjoying his second spell in charge at the Wham Stadium.

He joined Accrington Stanley first time around, in 1999, with them then playing in the Northern Premier League First Division. His 12-and-a-half-year tenure saw the club win three promotions as champions to enter the Football League in 2006. He is also the club's longest ever serving manager.

John Coleman

He rejoined Stanley in 2014 and last season led them to the title against all odds, and for the first half of this term, he had them eyeing a potential playoff place, but form has dipped and the Lancashire outfit now face a battle to retain their third tier status.

Both Dale Tonge and Kenny Dougall spoke to the media during the week, reflecting upon the Southend victory and looking ahead to Saturday's game.

This will be the 14th meeting between the two sides, if we are counting the original Stanley.

Our meeting earlier this season saw us run out 2-0 winners at the Wham Stadium as Cauley Woodrow and Kieffer Moore notched back on the 17th of November last year.

Woodrow scores

The sides first met back in 1932. The Reds winning 4-0 at Oakwell in a Division Three North clash.

In the 1933/34 campaign, Barnsley beat Stanley 6-0 at home and 9-0 away!

The referee for this weekend's fixture is Dean Whitestone. The Northamptonshire-based official last took charge of a Reds game back in August of 2015 when Barnsley edged Millwall away 3-2.

Dean Whitestone

Saturday will be his 30th fixture of the season. He's issued 85 yellow cards and sent off three players.

REPORT: Barnsley 2-0 Accrington

9 March 2019

Another three points on the board for the Reds as they see off a spirited Stanley outfit here at Oakwell.

A first Oakwell strike for Dimitri Cavaré and a Will Wood own goal towards the end of the first half saw Barnsley to another victory, stretching their unbeaten league run to 16 matches.

With Jacob Brown and Cameron McGeehan serving suspensions for their respective misdemeanours at Southend United last weekend, Reds Head Coach, Daniel Stendel drafted in Jordan Green for his first Reds start and there was a starting place also for German midfielder Mike Bähre.

Barnsley started brightly enough, the football on show was pleasing on the eye as always but the early goal never came.

This despite the best efforts of Cauley Woodrow and Alex Mowatt who both saw shots from just outside the box fly inches wide of either post.

We had to wait until the 33rd minute before Accrington showed their offensive game. A long-range effort had dip and swerve on it and Adam Davies - making his 200th Reds appearance - couldn't hold the shot but did excellently well to deal with the rebound, charging down the ball and claiming ahead of the onrushing striker.

The Reds did take the lead at last when Woodrow played a diagonal low ball towards the far side and Stanley defenders hesitated, allowing the marauding Cavaré to sneak in on the right angle of the box, and with Accrington 'keeper Maxted rushing out, Dimi slotted it into the empty net beyond him for 1-0.

That lead doubled on the stroke of half time. Some great footwork from Mama Thiam wide left, then an inviting cross which was missed by Maxted but not by Wood, his defender, and the ball ricocheted off the unfortunate centre half and into the net.

HALF TIME: Barnsley 2-0 Accrington

Right after the restart, Green fired a low shot in from the edge of the box, it hit the foot of the left hand post, rolled back across goal and away from danger.

Jordan Williams replaced Green on the hour mark, before Dani Pinillos saw yellow for a slide tackle in the corner of his own defensive third.

Billy Kee, the Stanley substitute then blazed wide when a lucky bounce saw him clean through on goal.

Maxted pulled off a wonderful, one-handed stop on the line to deny Liam Lindsay's bullet header from Mowatt's wicked delivery.

Another Accrington sub in Paul Smyth went close on 80 minutes but his shot from the angle of the box slid a foot wide.

Callum Styles made his Reds debut from the bench and linked superbly with Bähre around the box before Mike's effort was turned behind brilliantly by Maxted in goal.

It was a pleasing performance for Barnsley, and they are in good form heading into another two tough fixtures next week.

FULL TIME: Barnsley 2-0 Accrington

Davies, Cavaré, Pinnock, Lindsay, Pinillos, Green (J.Williams), Dougall, Mowatt, Thiam (Styles), Bähre (Hedges), Woodrow.
