PREVIEW: Gillingham Vs Barnsley

8 February 2019

The Reds head to Kent on Saturday for the latest Sky Bet League One clash against the Gills, and we've got it covered here in our big match preview.

The high-flying Reds made it a perfect 10 last time out when they saw off Scunthorpe United at Oakwell.

Last weekend's 2-0 victory over the Iron saw Daniel Stendel's side move into the automatic promotion places.

Mowatt

Goals from midfield duo Alex Mowatt and Cameron McGeehan were enough to end the run of the division's form team.

This weekend sees a different proposition for Barnsley, as they head to the Priestfield Stadium to tackle a Gillingham outfit who are struggling this season.

With just the one victory in their last six league fixtures, Steve Lovell's men have been unable to find any consistency in results.

Currently sat 19th in the table, just a point above the relegation zone, they'll be looking on Saturday to get their first home win since Boxing Day.

Eaves

They do however, have one of the division's leading scorers in Tom Eaves. The big frontman has already bagged himself 15 goals in Sky Bet League One this season.

During midweek it was confirmed that Stendel had appointed interim-coach Dale Tonge into his first team setup on a more permanent basis, until at least the end of the season.

The gaffer was joined by Dale and fellow Assistant Coach Chris Stern in this week's pre-match press conference whilst defender Dani Pinillos - who made his return from injury in the Scunthorpe win - also met with the assembled media to preview the Gills fixture, and their full videos are available on iFollow Barnsley.

Saturday will be the 32nd meeting between the two clubs.

The first time the sides met was way back in 1913 when the Reds, trying to defend their FA Cup beat the Gills 3-1 in a replay at Oakwell.

Barnsley have won seven of the last eight fixtures, the most recent being the 2-1 victory on home soil this season when a Kieffer Moore brace was enough for all three points.

2-1 over Gills

It was February of 2016 though when Gillingham last toppled the Reds, a 2-1 victory at Priestfield Stadium in this very division.

REPORT: Gillingham 1-4 Barnsley

Superb display seals three points

9 February 2019

The Reds hammer Gillingham here at the Priestfield Stadium with yet another devastating performance.

A Kieffer Moore opener, a brace from Cauley Woodrow and a last-gasp Jacob Brown strike saw off a spirited Gills side this afternoon.

Daniel Stendel had named an unchanged side ahead of the fixture and the decision looked the right one when after just 16 seconds his Reds players forged ahead.

A Brown run down the right flank ended with a Mamadou Thiam dummy, Cameron McGeehan fired a low shot at goal from just inside the box but home 'keeper Tomas Holy got down well to parry, unfortunately for him it landed nicely for Moore who slammed home the finish for 1-0!

Moore was denied a second five minutes later when he chose to shoot instead of squaring a pass for Thiam. The big man's effort was repelled by Holy from just inside the box.

Alex Mowatt went close twice in the space of a minute when first he saw his effort from the edge of the box parried by Holy before seconds later he crashed an effort off the crossbar from six yards out.

Reds skipper Adam Davies stood up well midway through the half when he turned a Tom Eaves strike round the posts as the Gills looked to hit back.

Right on half time however, the Reds doubled their lead. A terrific piece of wing-play from Thiam saw him eventually float a cross over to the far post and Woodrow planted a looping header into the opposite corner!

HALF TIME: Gillingham 0-2 Barnsley

Just after the hour mark, a crazy goalmouth scramble saw the Gillingham net live a charmed life. McGeehan, Thiam and Moore all had efforts on goal as the ball pinballed around the box with the post, blocks and finally a save denying Barnsley a third strike of the afternoon.

Holy was again at full stretch to thwart Moore from range, getting down low to stop a terrific 20-yarder from Kieffer, with 25 minutes left to play.

It was 3-0 on 71 minutes though as Woodrow was on hand at the back post as usual to fire home unmarked after Liam Lindsay had flicked on a Thiam corner kick.

Cauley was replaced by Mike Bähre immediately after bagging his 11th of the campaign.

With 78 minutes played a second change as the tireless Mowatt was swapped for Kenny Dougall in midfield.

The hosts grabbed a consolation on 82 when Elliott List buried an effort from the edge of the area following a free-kick that wasn't cleared.

Within a minute, an aerial clash between Gills defender Gabriel Zakuani and Moore saw them both badly hurt, with the former limping off with help from his physios, and the Reds striker who was down for nearly 10 minutes was attended to by medical personnel before being stretchered off and taken to hospital.

Jordan Green replaced big Kieffer as the Reds looked to confirm another three points.

The gloss finish was applied when the star man Brown stabbed into the roof of the net via the crossbar close in, after some more Thiam magic out wide.

Another victory, another four goals, but our thoughts are with Kieffer Moore tonight.

FULL TIME: Gillingham 1-4 Barnsley

Davies, Cavaré, Pinnock, Lindsay, Pinillos, Thiam, Brown, McGeehan, Mowatt (Dougall), Moore (Green), Woodrow (Bähre).

Unused: Walton, Fryers, Adeboyejo, Hedges.
