WE HAVE IMPROVED AS A TEAM AND HAVE BETTER PLAYERS WHO ARE ASSETS TO THIS FOOTBALL CLUB - DAVEY
REDS boss Simon Davey gave his thoughts ahead of the trip to Cardiff City.
"We were very pleased to get the points we need against Charlton last weekend. We should have done it earlier but I do not think it was ever in any doubt. We did it in style in the end and we always had the belief that we would stay in this division. We have done it now and there is no pressure on us going into Sunday's game at Cardiff.
"At the end of the day we always wanted to improve on last season. We have done that in every department. We have more points, we have more wins, we have conceded less and with a few goals at Cardiff we will have scored more as well. We have improved as a team and have better players who are assets to this football club. We now have a good squad which, with a few additions in the summer, will be competing higher in the league next season.
"Sunday is just another game that we want to win even though we were very disappointed to lose against Cardiff at Wembley last time. We want to win this game and we want to finish the season on a high with 58 points. We are going into the game looking for three points. There has been pressure on us all season. We always knew that we would stay up and we were never nervous. You are under pressure if you are winning or losing games and we, as a club, thrive on that.
"I am not going to experiment at Cardiff this weekend because we do have injury problems going into the game. Brian Howard has reopened the cut on his ankle in training this morning and will not be fit for the game. Kayode Odejayi has also not been able to train this week through injury and he will not be fit for Sunday. Stephen Foster, Martin Devaney and Brian will miss the Cardiff game but we have had Jamal (Campbell-Ryce) back in training today so he could be fit. All it does is give someone else the opportunity to come in and play.
"This is a game that Cardiff really do not need but they will want to win it and go to the FA Cup Final on a high. Likewise we want to end the season on a high and give our fans a good send off. There is no pressure on either team and I think that will make for an exciting and well-fought game.
"I think I need three or four players this summer. We will strengthen but I also know that I have until August 9 to get the right ones. That is when the season starts so there is no rush.
"I think we have done as well as we probably could have this season when you bring in 14 or 15 new players. They have gelled but at the same time they have not yet gelled enough. When you look at the last couple of games a lot of those players had not come through any sort of pre-season with us so they will be better next time for doing that. We will hit the ground running next August.
