BARNSLEY manager Simon Davey completed his first deal of the new transfer window by signing FA Cup hero Luke Steele from West Bromwich Albion in May 2008.

Luke enjoyed a very successful loan spell at Oakwell during 2007/2008, helping the Reds to Wembley for a FA Cup Semi Final. He was named FA Cup Player Of The Round following the Fifth Round win at Anfield as well as securing Championship status with some fine displays.

Born in Peterborough, Luke came through the ranks at his home town club before earning a big move to Manchester United in 2002. He spent time on loan at Coventry City before joining West Brom in 2006. Luke returned to Coventry on loan last season for a brief spell. He joined up with the Reds ahead of the trip to Anfield in February 2008 and went on to make 17 first team appearances last season.

Reds manager Simon Davey said: "We are delighted to have netted Luke on a permanent basis after he performed so well for us last season.

"We now have two top quality keepers in Luke and Heinz Muller who will both by vying for the number one jersey at Oakwell next season. That is very healthy competition and is what we are looking to achieve in every department".
