IT IS A GREAT GAME TO START WITH - STEELE

Posted on: Fri 18 Jun 2010

REDS keeper Luke Steele cannot wait for the opening weekend of the new season.

The Reds will travel to Loftus Road to face Queens Park Rangers on opening day - the same fixture as at the start of the 2008/2009 campaign.

Luke told www.barnsleyfc.co.uk: "It's the same as the other year it should be a great game and one we can really look forward to. The pitches are always in fantastic condition on the opening weekend and Queens Park Rangers are a big club who put on quite a show with fireworks last time. It's a great game to start with.

"Queens Park Rangers have money to spend and there has been of talk about them pushing on into the Premier League during the last few seasons. They have had a lot of different managers there and it just has not happened for them and it will be interesting to see who they bring in through the summer. I am sure they will be one of the biggest spenders in the division again.

"We will be going out there fresh and with a new side - I do not think you can even start to predict either starting eleven at the moment and I am sure we will see some more players coming in here. No one likes losing their opening match and we have not won on the first day for a few years now. That is something we could do with changing.

"Any away win is nice but to get three points on the road on the opening day of the season would be a cracking start for us. The first day is still two months away and we have a lot of hard work to put in before then".

With the start of pre-season looming large, Luke is raring to get back in and start the build up to the new campaign.

He added: "I am looking forward to getting back at it now. I have had my break and cannot wait to get into the club and see everybody. Everything is always shiny and new at the start of pre-season and it will be great to see the new lads, new kit and get back into it. It should be something new for everybody as well this summer as this will be Mark Robins' first pre-season with us. I am sure they will have a new programme to work through and it will be different to what we have done before.

"Watching the World Cup every day is really starting to whet my appetite for it and I cannot wait to get back and start again".
