BARNSLEY last faced Rochdale at the start of the 1996/97 season in the League Cup First Round.
Played over two legs, the Reds went down 2-1 at Spotland on August 20, with Paul Wilkinson netting for Danny Wilson's side. The return at Oakwell on September 3 saw Wilkinson and Neil Redfearn score a goal apiece to send the Reds through.

The Reds League Cup campaign ended in the Second Round with defeat over two legs by Gillingham. Barnsley were held to a 1-1 draw at Oakwell and lost the second leg at the Priestfield Stadium.
Barnsley made history during the 1996/1997 season when the Reds won promotion to the top flight for the first time by finishing second in Division One. Rochdale finished the season mid-table in Division Three.
The Reds have by far the better record against Rochdale, picking up 20 wins to the Dale's nine, while nine of the games have finished level. The 1996/1997 League Cup meeting is the only one to date in the competition.
Rochdale's only victory at Oakwell came in a Division Four match in April 1979. Dale won 3-0 on the day, avenging defeat by the same scoreline at Spotland earlier in the season.
