IT was a century ago this week that Barnsley FC first burst into the public's consciousness with an outstanding run to the 1910 FA Cup Final.
The Reds beat Blackpool, Bristol Rovers, West Brom, Queens Park Rangers and Everton to set up a date at Crystal Palace against Newcastle United.
More than 77,000 fans packed the Crystal Palace ground on Saturday April 23, 1910, as Barnsley locked horns with the Magpies. It all started so well as Harry Tufnell put Barnsley in front just before half time. A glorious FA Cup win was not to be as Newcastle hit back with ten minutes remaining through Rutherford to snatch an equaliser and force a replay.
The replay took place on Thursday April 28, 1910, at Goodison Park, Liverpool, and was again watched by 65,000 fans. This time Newcastle proved a little too strong for the Reds, who were to finish ninth in Division Two that season, as Shepherd scored twice to send the FA Cup to Tyneside.
Barnsley's FA Cup dreams were not extinguished and they were back in the final two years later - beating West Bromwich Albion to loft the famous trophy for the first and only time after a replay.
