Scunthorpe United 2-1 Barnsley
Report from Glanford Park

Paul Hayes netted a vital late winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time as Scunthorpe beat Barnsley 2-1 at Glanford Park on Tuesday night.

Gary Hooper put United ahead at the start of the second half but Barnsley substitute Daniel Bogdanovic capitalised on a defensive mistake to level the score.

However, Hayes superbly notched the winner with seconds left to send the Iron back to winning ways after a miserable three game losing run.

Nigel Adkins' side entered the game making two changes from the side thumped 5-1 at the weekend by Leicester City.

Martyn Woolford and Matt Sparrow came into the midfield for Grant McCann and Michael O'Connor as boss Nigel Adkins seeked to remedy Saturday's problems.

Joe Murphy started in goal, with Michael Raynes, David Mirfin, Rob Jones and Marcus Williams forming the defence.

The midfield consisted of Matt Sparrow, Sam Togwell, Josh Wright and Martyn Woolford, while Hayes partnered Hooper up front.

The substitutes were Josh Lillis, Andrew Wright, Kenny Milne, Grant McCann, Michael O'Connor, Donal McDermott and Jonathan Forte.

It was the third time in which the two sides had met this season after taking on one another at Oakwell in the league and Glanford Park in the FA Cup.

The game got off to a slow start, however, with the first half being pretty forgettable.

The visitors had their first chance of the game in the sixth minute when Anderson De Silva's shot on the turn from outside the area went over the crossbar.

Woolford had a shot blocked in the 13th minute as Scunthorpe looked to get some momentum going. Then, shortly after, Hooper fired a shot straight at the visiting goalkeeper Luke Steele.

In the 23rd minute, the marksman thrashed a half-volley just wide of the post after being played through and managing to get the better of Darren Moore.

Twinkletoed midfielder Filipe Teixeira tried to spark an opening for Barnsley by dribbling down the left and flashing in a shot but that was blocked by Raynes.

Shortty after, in a similar move, he played the ball to team-mate Adam Hammill, who fired over the crossbar. Nathan Doyle, formerly of Hull, then struck a drive over the crossbar soon after.

Adam Hammill struck a low drive just wide of Murphy's bottom right-hand post just before the break, while Woolford fizzed a volley over the crossbar for the home side after a corner had only been part cleared.

The game picked up in the second half though, and the Iron went ahead on 50 minutes. Hayes started the move, passing to Sparrow who smashed the ball across goal for Hooper, who struck his team ahead with his 11th goal of the season through a clever flick.

The Tykes responded to the goal by pushing forward but, as a result, it meant the game opened up and Scunthorpe could counter-attack.

Hooper was played through in the 60th minute but his first touch let him down as he tried to send the ball beyond Steele, but the 'stopper saved it.

Hayes flashed a stinging volley in from the edge of the area, which Steele tipped wide of the mark.

Sparrow very nearly went past Steele and scored but Dickinson did well to tackle back before the midfielder sent in a rebound shot which Steele saved well.

Woolford then ran at the defence and curled a shot over. It got the crowd going though as United pushed for a second goal.

There was a triple Iron change soon after, with O'Connor on for Josh Wright, McCann replacing Togwell and Andrew Wright displacing Raynes.

With 12 minutes to go though, substitute Bogdanovic, who capitalised on a slip by Jones and struck the ball past Murphy from a tight angle inside the area.

Both teams were going for a winner in the closing stages, with Andrew Wright having a half-chance for Scunthorpe when Steele saved his strike across goal after he had been teed up by Sparrow.

Woolford was fouled on the edge of the Tykes penalty area in the dying embers of the game, and McCann teed the ball up for a free-kick special, but with a swing of his left boot the shot was deflected wide of goal.

Soon after, Woolford was fed by Hooper and struck in a shot which was deflected wide of goal. Nothing came of the subsequent corner though and the Iron couldn't find that decisive goal - until the fifth minute of stoppage time when Hayes struck.

The Iron applied some late pressure, as the ex-Tykes man notched against his former club for the third time this season. An O'Connor corner was cleared away, there was a scramble in the box as Woolford had a couple of shots blocked, Sparrow received the ball and passed to Hayes, who curled it past the goalkeeper from just inside the area.

And that was that, as the whistle for full-time was blown just seconds later and United held on for a vital win.

Scunthorpe are next in action on Saturday when they host Watford.
