Barnsley 2-3 Bristol City
Adam Baker reports from Oakwell

City bagged their first away win since February in a five-goal thriller at Barnsley.

Nicky Maynard and Evander Sno set City on their way in the first half, before a freak second period strike Daniel Bogdanovic gave the hosts hope.

But Ryan Shotton hauled back Danny Haynes in the box to receive a straight red card and hand City a spot-kick. Although Jamie McAllister's effort was saved, Marvin Elliott pounced to send in the rebound and seemingly wrap up the win.

Adam Hammill pulled one back in stoppage time for a nervy ending, but City held on.

After a slow start, Stephen Foster tested Dean Gerken for the first time with a scuffed shot goalwards on a skiddy surface.

Moments later Emil Hallfredsson was afforded too much time and space on the edge of the box and it needed a fingertip save from Gerken to divert the midfielder's shot against the crossbar and away. Iain Hume was poised for the rebound but he shot into the ground and watched the ball bounce over.

Bradley Orr provided a goal-saving header to deny Hume, and then Shotton missed a free header from the resultant corner.

On 19 minutes City lost Orr to a calf injury, with Cole Skuse replacing him at right wing-back.

Finally City found themselves in the game with a Jamie McAllister free kick from wide curling goalwards and forcing Luke Steele into a save.

The opener came out of nothing on 26 minutes following a long ball forward from Gerken. Darren Moore missed his clearance and Maynard pounced, heading the ball on for himself before slotting past the onrushing Steele.

Now City were motoring with Marvin Elliott going close with a header and Louis Carey curling a shot wide of the mark.

Then, with three minutes of the first half left, Skuse's pass down the right channel put Haynes away. The forward tricked his way into the box and cut it back into a crowded penalty area. Maynard was unable to stab in but Sno was waiting for a cool side-footed finish for his first City goal.

City began the second half as trhey had ended the first, on the front foot. Lee Johnson's through pass put Haynes away but Foster charged to make a smart block when a third goal seemed likely.

Substitute Anderson de Silva teed up Andy Gray in the box but Gerken made a parried save to keep out the striker's angled shot.

Unfortunately the keeper couldn't do the same with Bogdanovic's swivel-shot on n62 minutes which squirmed under his body and over the line for a Barnsley lifeline.

Now the pressure was on City with de Silva and fellow substitute Jacob Butterfield both going close from distance.

But the game was finally put to bed on 74 minutes when Shotton was dismissed for hauling back Haynes when through on goal, subsequently giving away a spot-kick too. Jamie McAllister saw his penatly parried out by Steele, but Elliott was on hand to prod in the rebound.

Bogdanovic almost provided an instant response for the hosts but his shot was deflected wide.

Late replacement Gavin Williams, on for Sno, almost made it 4-1 with a long range attempt which flashed inches wide near the end.

Hammill then curled in a brilliant effort in stoppage time to give the home fans hope, but it wasn't to be and City clung on for the win.
