FULL TIME FROM OAKWELL
BARNSLEY 3 (Macken 22, Anderson 45, Colace 75)
BURNLEY 2 (Fletcher 21, Eagles 53)
THERE'S something magical about cup matches under the lights at Oakwell and the Reds again made it a night to remember by dumping Premier League side Burnley out of the Carling Cup.
Reds boss Mark Robins made just one change to the side that drew with Swansea City last time out with Jon Macken replacing the cup tied Andy Gray. Although the Clarets were filling their cups at home in the Premier League, Owen Coyle's side had struggled on the road with only their Second Round win at Hartlepool puncturing their glooming form on the road. Burnley made six changes but still had a formidable side out at Oakwell.
The Reds had a shout for a penalty waved away on three minutes as Stephen Foster tussled with Clarke Carlisle as the pair went for Iain Hume's early corner. Referee Mark Clattenburg gave nothing.
Barnsley were almost undone on ten minutes as Fernando Guerrero's run cut right through the heart of the Reds defence but Darren Moore was in the right place to make a fine block to turn it away. From Chris Eagles' corner Steven Fletcher powered a header goalward only for Rob Kozluk to block the ball on the line.
Burnley were forced into a change on 15 minutes when striker Martin Paterson was carried off after twisting his knee. Jay Rodriguez replaced him.
Eagles managed to get in behind Barnsley again just moments later as he ghosted past a couple of challenges but was denied by David Preece's fine save.
The Premier League side were in front on 21 minutes when Brian Jensen's long kick gave Fletcher something to fight with against Moore. Fletcher won his battle and smacked an unstoppable shot past Preece and into the bottom corner.
Barnsley never let their heads drop and pulled it back within a minute. Anderson did well to break down the left and fired over a peach of a cross for Hume to attack. Hume's header was good but the ball cannoned back off the post. Macken was on hand to tap the rebound into the empty net.
It was end to end stuff and Eagles had Barnsley chasing on 26 minutes as he raced through the middle of the park before bringing a smart low save from Preece.
Guerrero then had Kozluk and Hugo Colace chasing shadows two minutes later as he cut into the area but the winger was all left foot and twisted himself into trouble before blazing high over. Burnley had a worrying moment just after the half hour when Jensen crashed into Moore as the pair went for a high ball. The Clarets keeper was in some discomfort and left the field with Peruvian shot stopper Diego Penny being thrown into the fray.
Barnsley had the ball in the back of the net again on 35 minutes as Hume was played clean through down the left hand channel. Penny did well to come out and smother the ball but it broke loose and Adam Hammill thought he had netted a second for the Reds only for play to be pulled back for a foul. It was a little harsh.
Anderson again had the ball past Penny on 40 minutes as he rifled Hammill's cross into the net but again was denied by a raised flag.
Anderson should have made it two just a couple of minutes later as he met Macken's cross eight yards out but somehow put the chance wide of the mark. It was a golden opportunity but again he would have probably been denied by a flag.
There was still time to play after the referee indicated a minimum of eight minutes stoppage time. Richard Eckersley, who had been booked earlier in the half, should have walked when he hauled back Hammill. It was a clear booking and Eckersley really ought to have been sent off but the Premier League side got away with it.
Anderson got is goal deep in stoppage time after Hammill had broke well but found his path forward crowded out. The ball broke to the Brazilian 30 yards out and he smashed an unstoppable shot past Penny and into the top corner.
Moore's collision with Jensen obviously had an effect on the big man as he failed to make the field for the second half. O'Neil Thompson replaced him.
Barnsley were on the front foot right from the off and Hume tested Penny within seconds of the restart with a curler that the Burnley keeper did well to hold.
The Reds had struggled to cope with outstanding ex-Real Madrid youngster Guerrero and the little winger again showed Kozluk a clean pair of heels on 53 minutes as he skipped away and into the area. The Ecuadorian international found the right pass as well to give Eagles the simplest of tap ins.
Fletcher almost paid the ultimate price for needlessly flying into Preece on 56 minutes as he picked up a head injury. The big striker was able to continue.
Barnsley forced the play and a string of corners on the hour mark eventually ended with Julian Gray lashing a left foot volley high over the bar from 20 yards.
It was fast becoming a real cracker and Foster picked up a caution on the hour mark before Eagles brought another fine stop from Preece moments later.
The moment Barnsley fans had been waiting for came on 75 minutes. Outstanding play by Macken gave Anderson the chance to cross and the Brazilian, who had an outstanding evening, put the ball on a plate for Colace to head past Penny from 12 yards.
Colace was not finished and brought a save from Penny three minutes later with a well-struck shot from the edge of the box.
Burnley threw everything at the Reds but Preece was in fine form to deny Eagles on 82 minutes and then grab Carlisle's header moments later.
