BUXTON 0
BARNSLEY 3 (Bogdanovic 7, 26; Odejayi 20)
IT was a good work out but the Reds failed to really capitalise on an excellent first half display during which they coasted to a three goal lead.
On an evening that was more autumnal than anything else with a cold wind blowing off the hills, the Reds kicked off their pre-season campaign at picturesque Buxton against a Bucks side who had hosted the Reds for the last two years.
Simon Davey handed starts to Maxime Chernot and Chris Ramsey while Dean Morgan was due for 45 minutes after the break. Onome Sodje started the game - his first appearance for the Reds since his summer move.
The first real chance fell to a lively home side on six minutes when a mix up between Chernot and Sodje allowed Gavin Knight the chance to race in on goal but the Bucks striker shot straight at Luke Steele.
Barnsley were in front just two minutes later when Kayode Odejayi rose highest to flick the ball on to Daniel Bogdanovic and the Maltese international was coolness personified in beating Scott Hartley.
Sodje almost had his first Barnsley goal on 18 minutes as he rose to meet Martin Devaney's corner after Hartley had misjudged the ball but Grant Black was in the right place to head away from off the line.
The second goal came just two minutes later after Sodje and Bogdanovic had pressured the Buxton defence into mistakes in their own penalty area. The ball bounced nicely for Odejayi and the big striker made no mistake sweeping the ball past Hartley from ten yards.
It could have been three on 23 minutes when Sodje again rose highest in the six yard box to get his head onto Hugo Colace's free kick but the ball fizzed a foot or so over the bar.
It was three on 26 minutes and again Odejayi had a huge part to play as he raced onto Colace's pass before squaring well to give Bogdanovic the simplest of tap ins.
Ex-Red Black almost got on the scoresheet himself on 28 minutes as he nipped in behind Rob Kozluk but was denied by Steele's smart save. Steele was beaten on 33 minutes when Gregg Anderson rose to meet Steve Ridley's corner but the big defender could only watch as his header drifted wide of the far post.
Odejayi used his strength to outmuscle Anderson easily on 39 minutes to open Buxton up again but the striker was denied his second by Hartley's outstanding diving save.
Buxton were almost right back in the game just three minutes after the restart when Michael Towey got his head to Black's free kick but Steele was again in fine form to keep the non-league side at bay. Jacob Butterfield did his best to liven things up on 56 minutes with a low drive that flew just wide while Jon Macken was only inches away from finding the top corner seconds later.
Macken turned provider on 58 minutes as his pass put Reuben Noble-Lazarus in but the youngster was denied by Hartley.
Anderson lit up The Silverlands ten minutes later with the pass of the match to split the Bucks defence wide open and give Jamil Adam a chance but the youngster rushed his volley and shot high over. Adam smashed one into the sidenetting on 73 minutes before Macken ought to have broken the back of the net four minutes later after being played in by Butterfield.
Anderson again had the better of the Buxton defence on 87 minutes as his pass put Morgan through but the ex-Luton man could only shoot straight at Hartley.
